[ History ] :
Not much is known about Johnny regarding his past, but the swashbuckling pirate we see today was once a timid boy. When he was young, Johnny used to idolize his father. He wanted to become everything like his dad, going as far as to adopt his father's principles in the regards of caring for others. Johnny was raised to put the needs of others before his own. His father was always eager to help all those in need, whether it be friend or foe. It was no surprise why Johnny loved his father so much, his dad was a great man.

Unfortunately, his father's big heart is what accidentally caused his untimely demise. Left orphan once a Gear killed his father in cold blood, Johnny suffered greatly during the remainder of his youth. Like many other children left orphan during the Crusades, Johnny grew up in a dark lonely world devoid of love. Uncertain of what path to take in his life, Johnny clung to the ideals of his father and disallowed hatred to consume him. Instead of becoming as downtrodden as the rest of the world, Johnny chose to uplift the world and embrace both humanity and the Gears.

The inspiration of his father's legacy called for him to follow in the old man's footsteps. It doesn't matter to Johnny if he's helping a close friend or a stranger, he vowed to always go far and beyond for the sake others. In doing so Johnny formed a band of young sky-pirates called the Jellyfish Pirates, who stole from the rich and give to the poor.. While stealing in itself is a rather vile act, Johnny believes that every coin stolen from the rich would benefit more in the hands of the sick, poor, and orphaned. This is how he planned to follow in his father's footsteps, by giving to the less fortunate no matter if they were human or not. With the help of his crew of twelve skilled women, Johnny sails the skies aboard his famed airship called the Mayship. These twelve young women are girls that Johnny himself adopted and raised as his own. In addition, the namesake of his hovercraft is named after his first-mate, May.

During the course of the Guilty Gear arcs, Johnny appears time and time again as both a combatant in the tournaments and as an informant to Ky Kiske of the Holy Order. While his connection to Ky isn't very defined, it is a known fact that Johnny is indeed a "wanted man" on the run from the Post War Administration Bureau, an organization formed after the Crusades to piece the world back together again. His daring exploits against both the rich and the P.W.A.B earned Johnny quite a bounty on his head, but the fearless Captain of the Jellyfish remains undaunted.

[ Personality ] :
To the untrained eye, Johnny comes across as a surly braggart with one too many bad habits. While that is most certainly true, that isn't all there is to say about Johnny. Yes, he's a compulsive womanizer and "Yes" he can be a tad meddlesome at times, but Johnny is actually a man who possesses a very big heart. He genuinely cares for all his friends, and goes out of his way to protect even strangers from harm. While some of his swashbuckling personality certainly leaves some aspect of Johnny to be undesired, he is most certainly a noble fellow. Not many people would believe that this gambling drunkard does anything positive with his time, but Johnny actually does.

Besides giving the bounties he receives from his pirate raids to the less fortunate, Johnny is a rather well-learned man. He may come across as an untrained idiot, but his skills in his Iaido swordsmanship speaks otherwise. There is no document stating how or when Johnny mastered that style, but it's evident in his fighting demeanor that he possesses a level of patience and skill that rivals most men. Johnny is a confident man, and that confidence is alluded within his every step. Sometimes this endless coolness he possesses can come across as arrogance, but that is because Johnny is just a tad self-absorbed. He craves and loves attention; always going out of his way to get the final word in or the perfect entrance. Johnny Sfondi is a bit of a ham.

He has a bad habit of sometimes referencing his own beauty and appeal to others, making himself seem very shallow and one dimensional. Johnny views himself as both "God's gift to women", and as a legend amongst men. Whether or not he lives up to such grand ideals has yet to be determined. He likes to hide his emotions behind this facade of arrogance, but every now and then it's revealed just how much of a decent guy Johnny really is.

In all, he's just another rebel without a cause. A young punk who dreams big, who's naive enough to think he can save everyone. He's a foreboding opponent on the battlefield, but a carefree young man at heart. Johnny is more of a lover than a fighter, yet his willingness to protect others drives him to the battlefield constantly. He's a tad foolish that way, as well as reckless. Johnny has a habit of leaping before he looks, but that is because he believes he'll always land safely. Although, one must wonder if a 'darker' personality lies under all that poised charm and class. For those looking for one, they won't find anything really negative to say about his character. Johnny is as genuine as they come.

[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :

Strengths

As mentioned before, Johnny is a master of the Iaido martial art called the "Uncho Shihan Jikiden", translation: Cloud Sword-Fighting Style. Much like it's namesake, it focuses on the power of Johnny's "Mist" attacks that are executed in smooth, controlled movements. Unlike other styles that calls for the wielder to thrust his blade blindly at his opponents, this style of swordsmanship calls for the wielder to achieve an almost "Zen" like way of fighting. The practitioners of Iaido are typically calm and level-headed considering the non-competitive aspect of the style.

The only importance in Iaido involves the wielders movements and motion, as well as instinctive reactions. This explains why unlike other characters in Guilty Gear, Johnny seems utterly composed always during the heat of battle. He's not easily spooked or riled up, and Johnny is potentially at his most lethal when he's at his calmest. By drawing his sword quickly out of its wooden scabbard. Johnny can literally disable and disarm a person in just three or four swift movements, making him a rather dangerous contender to face. Along with his swordsmanship, Johnny has a habit of tossing gold coins at his challengers in the middle of combat in order to throw them off balance. This little trick of his is as dirty as tossing sand into someone's eyes, but be damned if it doesn't work.

Besides the deadliness of his blade, Johnny is athletically fit. He can jump higher and further than most people, and even perform aerial feats that literally defy gravity. However, given the nature of his world, such a skill seems slightly common amongst other fighters. Johnny is still very much human, but he does possess some skills that make it seem as if he's not. His fighting prowess is unlimited, much like his kindness.

Moving on a bit from his physical strengths, Johnny is actually quite intelligent. He might not be intelligent enough to be some world-class lawyer or doctor, but the man possesses a brain. He's as crafty as they come, being both shrewd and clever. If he can outsmart the authorities in his world with ease, then Johnny is certainly much smarter than he seems. The man may not be "book smart" but he is "street smart".

Weaknesses

Despite all his skills with the blade, Johnny has one weakness that truly hinders him. The fact that he's just human puts the odds against him if he's facing up against the supernatural. Of course, he would try his best to win no matter what, but Johnny's limitations are simply based on his mortality. He bleeds like everyone else and most certainly can perish during combat. While Johnny may think he's immortal; in all truth...he isn't. Johnny knows truly that he isn't invincible, but that doesn't stop him from being horribly reckless.

Another weakness Johnny has happens to be his overly flirtatious nature. He's a bastard womanizer, a trait that not many women would find attractive at all. Johnny is always trying to woo the ladies, sometimes coming off as a complete moron in the process. His womanizing ways can also lead him into trouble, especially since he has a bad habit of thinking that he must always save the damsel-in-distress. He generally seems to give off the sense that he views women as creatures that need to be protected, which gives him a slightly egotistical vibe about him.
