Personality:

Neji is intelligent and highly capable, and retains a calm and dignified air- though still oftentimes regarded as somewhat distant and uptight despite his general courtesy to those around him. He’s not a person that understands or participates in genuine humor and so his amusement usually stays at just that while smiles that aren’t meant purely as gestures for mild humor or understanding are few and far in-between. As such, he can be seen as rather plain with a realistic point of view that can be misinterpreted as blatant negativity, and though young, is usually rather sensible.

Though well-mannered and graced with tact and a considerable amount of patience, Neji can be arrogant and harsh and come across as an elitist with only a preference for skill and intelligence, and it may not be far off. While he can respect and appreciate strength and ability in someone on an equal or higher level than himself, it doesn’t really tend to hinder his relations.

Withdrawn, Neji’s usually rather quiet, and prefers silence and peace to excitement and rowdiness. With an almost recluse introversion, he spends more time contemplating, rationalizing, and observing more than he does actually interacting, and possesses innate perception and insight wrapped in a somewhat traditional way of thinking.

His team couldn’t be more different, however, and with their antics, Gai and Lee’s enthusiasm act as a cheerful sledgehammer to his dignity and fickle pride; boasts often loud and passionate to combat the sincere silences and careful organization with which the Hyuuga is used to surrounding himself with. His stubborn pride is easily wounded, and caught off-balance in such a way, is prone to haughty indignities.

If left with no time to recover or steel himself, he’s given to fluster and quickly humiliated into a quiet fury that can encompass varying levels of irritation, annoyance, and anger depending on the form and severity of the level of embarrassment he suffers through. It’s these instances that the hint of fire hiding underneath the surface of Neji’s generally passive personality and stance is most visible- while formality tends to act as a last-resort mask for vulnerability.

It comes as no surprise then, that Neji frequently considers himself to be the most reasonable one of the group- oftentimes taking refuge in Tenten (the girl, or kunoichi of the team) who is usually sensible. He’s the first one to look to when one requires a plan that necessitates any level of subtlety, and acting as a good balance to the different wild personalities grouped into one unit, Neji’s the one most gifted with a focused and objective outlook in terms of missions and goals. It’s these traits coupled with his keen sense of logic and pragmatic behaviour that make him an excellent squad leader.

And subtly, over the years spent under Maito Gai’s tutelage; Neji’s shell has cracked a bit further and he comes out of it a little easier than before. Although he’ll likely never outgrow his mild social awkwardness, he’s a little more open and willing to bend around those he’s familiar with.

Background:

Born to Hyuuga Hizashi- the younger twin of Hyuuga Hiashi; Neji’s uncle and Hyuuga’s clan leader- Neji was born into the branch family of Hyuuga. Like most children born to shinobi families, he started training from a very young age and showed a lot of promise even then. At four, the traditional seal- a symbol of a caged bird- was engraved onto his forehead. Unofficially, he was made protector to Hyuuga Hiashi’s daughter- his cousin and biological sister, Hinata.

After a war that lasted for years against Konoha, Lightning Country finally signed a peace treaty that ended it. That day was also Hinata’s third birthday. After the celebrations to commemorate the day passed, a Kumo-nin attempted to kidnap the young Hyuuga heiress. Hiashi caught up to the intruder however and killed him, taking back his sleeping daughter.

The next day, outrage broke across the village- the kidnapping attempt was denied, and Lightning Country accused Konoha of readily breaking the treaty by killing one of their commanding officers. In recompense, they demanded the body of the murderer. It was a confirmed suspicion that the country was after the eyes of the Hyuuga clan, and the treaty had been a show to get inside the village.

It could not be proven, however, and so to avoid a repeat of the war and giving the Country what they wanted, Neji’s father died in Hiashi’s place. The Cursed Seal upon Hizashi’s forehead faded after death, effectively sealing the Byakugan and, being twin to Hiashi, provided the perfect double.

Learning this, Neji developed a hatred toward the Head Family of Hyuuga; believing they forced Hizashi to sacrifice himself in place of his brother because he was born a minute later, and thus, in the branch family of Hyuuga. He also started believing that, because of the circumstances under which both his father and himself were born, life was predetermined at birth by Fate.

He graduated the Academy at 12 as the ‘number one rookie’ of the year, and was placed on a team under Maito Gai along with Rock Lee and Tenten. Lee graduated as a ‘loser’ in Neji’s eyes because, through a genetic fault, Lee could not mould chakra and utilize basic, vital techniques needed for a shinobi’s survival. The disability prevented him from being able to perform any sort of Genjutsu or Ninjutsu, and so he dedicated his life and training to Taijutsu.

Neji and Lee did not get along. They both had extremely different world views, and Lee’s lack of talent made him the source of ridicule. Lee wouldn’t back down however, and insisted a loser could defeat a genius with hard work. Neji called him on it and Lee fell against him each time. Lee didn’t give up, as expected, and stuck close to his philosophy while Neji held onto his; believing in it more each time Lee failed to beat him.

Team Gai was held back for a year- with Gai believing his students were not ready for the Chuunin Exams so soon after their graduation as Genin. They spent that year training and working together, building their strength and teamwork. Another generation graduated, and Team Gai entered the Chuunin exams that time along with the new ‘rookie nine’.

They had high expectations for themselves- all quite sure and confident in their abilities- and passed the first and second part of the exam easily with Neji leading them. At the end of the second exam however, too many participants were left for the third test, and preliminary one-on-one matches were held to reduce the number of individuals that would participate in the third exam.

Neji fought his cousin, Hinata- former heir of Hyuuga- and won. During the ill-fated match, Neji sought to lower the timid girl’s self-confidence, and spoke derisive words while offering her the chance to back out before their fight began. After an interjection from Naruto, Hinata refused vehemently, and they fought- both wielding the same techniques. He nearly killed her by hitting her chest with a well-placed attack.

Spurned by one comment from his insightful cousin, and driven into a deep rage, he flew at her, intent on finishing it. He was stopped by a group of interfering Jounin however, and Hinata was immediately taken from the arena for emergency treatment. Naruto swore vengeance on him, and got his chance when they paired up for the first match in the final exam.

A month later, the two faced off in the third and last part of the Chuunin Exams. Throughout most of the fight, Neji had the upper hand-he was a genius, and Naruto, a dropout. Neji preached endlessly about the fight’s determined ending according to that logic, and instead of being disheartened by the words, Naruto grew increasingly aggravated, shooting back with his own words. They were words and promises that sent the Hyuuga reeling- the logic defying everything he believed in. Naruto summoned an unknown power even after losing the usage of most of the tenketsu in his body, and won through a sudden bout of cleverness.

Neji was taken by a medical team, but upon further inspection, suffered nothing more than chakra depletion and a few bruises. His uncle visited him and shooed away the medics that had been watching over him. Neji was distant, formal, and a little snide, but Hiashi made him listen to what he had to say. Having heard his nephew’s preconceived theory during the fight, he told Neji the truth behind his father’s death- that he had willingly given his life to save his brother and son, and acted out of love and not duty. Accepting this, and doubled with Naruto’s words, Neji began to change.

It was slow, and not immediately noticeable, but he started acting a little nicer to Lee who had just undergone major surgery, and was kinder and gentler with Hinata- trying to atone for his past actions. He has not visibly apologized to either of them, however.

Shortly after the invasion ended and a new Hokage was established, Sasuke left the village, and Neji was recruited by Shikamaru and his team to chase after Sasuke and bring him back. He said a few encouragements to Lee- who was still recovering- and pursued the missing-nin on a desperate quest while chasing Konoha’s ideals.

He was the second to branch off from the team, and stayed behind to fight another Sound opponent that had intended on halting their team’s progress. In it, he was severely disadvantaged, and, as an odd twist, was on the receiving end of his own derogatory words. Following the example of those before him that faced up to his own cruelty, Neji didn’t give up, and prevailed in one last final attack after suffering two holes through his chest. Kidoumaru died, and Neji fell unconscious. He was in a critical state when medics found him later, but he survived with a healing from Shizune and other trained medics, escaping death.

Their mission ultimately failed, and Naruto left the village to go train under Jiraiya. Sometime during the period of three years, Team Gai passed the Chuunin exams, and Neji advanced above his peers to Jounin. They embarked on a mission alongside Team Kakashi to save Sunagakure's newly elected Kazekage- Sabaku no Gaara- the jinchuuriki of Ichibi that Akatsuki targeted and captured, but were delayed in the process due to a semi-complex seal that triggered as they removed the barrier to the shinobi hideout.

With Neji watching the situation, they were able to regroup and rendevous with Team Kakashi shortly before Deidara escaped, making both teams believe he'd effectively blown himself up in an attempt to destroy them along with him. Although the Akatsuki succeeded in extracting Ichini, The mission was a success as one of the Sunagakure elders gave her life to restore Gaara's.

It's at some later point that Team Gai is sent out once again, only to return to see Pain decimating Konoha through sheer force, and just in time to call a medic over to a severely wounded Hinata.

Abilities:

Byakugan- White Eyes: Hyuuga’s Bloodline Limit

It’s a special type of Doujutsu- eye technique- that allows the user to see for long-distances and in a wide range of vision covering nearly 360 degrees. The Byakugan views the world through a colorless spectrum- eliminating any color confusion or distractions, and can also see through most any substance- including people. When used in combat, the eyes enable the wielder to see the individual chakra systems and monitor the flow of energy in shinobi and other beings. This special vision sparked the creation of Hyuuga’s Fighting Style: Jyuuken.

Jyuuken- Gentle Fist: Fighting Style

This fighting style is a specialized form of Taijutsu (martial arts) primarily used by Hyuuga while the Byakugan is active. With the enhanced vision, the user can see the main chakra system in any being, and more advanced eyesight can locate individual tenketsu- pressure points- that regulate the flow of chakra throughout a person’s body.

With Jyuuken, the user pools chakra into their hands and fingers to strike at and close those points with the user’s own chakra. Hit accurately, the pressure points close and can, in theory, prevent an opponent from utilizing any techniques. If all 361 points are hit, and the flow of chakra is completely stopped, the individual will die. In vital areas where chakra threads weave around major organs, this style of fighting can cause lasting internal damage even with a seemingly harmless attack.

Hakke Rokujyuu Yonshou- Divine 64 Palms: Offensive, mid to short-range

A unique form of Jyuuken, this combination attack has a total of one hundred and twenty eight strikes. The goal of this attack is to close the main 128 tenketsu in an opponent’s body to render any attacks useless. The technique starts with two strikes, then four more, eight more, and steadily doubles up to a sixty-four strike combination finish. Successfully, this technique can even fully paralyze an opponent.

Hakkeshou Kaiten- Heavenly Spin: Defensive

Exuding a large amount of chakra from every tenketsu in the body, the user creates a sort of invisible, but penetrable chakra barrier. The user then spins their body like a top to effectively stop and parry enemy attacks. This technique can only be utilized by those with advanced knowledge and control over their tenketsu. A variation of this technique lies in condensing chakra at a certain point as an attack enters this field to deflect the impact.

Hakke Kuusho- Divine Empty Palm: Offensive, mid-range

One of the few semi-ranged attacks Neji possesses, he gathers chakra into his palms and thrusts it toward his opponents with a seemingly invisible force that can send them either off-balance or throw them back an appreciable distance with similar effects of Jyuuken if the force hits solidly enough to disrupt vital tenketsu.

Weapons: A small number of basic shinobi tools: kunai, shuriken, wire, explosive tags, flash bombs, and makibishi as well as a basic emergency field kit with salves and bandages.

Meister Information:

[ MEISTER ONLY SECTION ]

Explain why you think your character was chosen to be a Meister, and why they are suitable for the position.

With rather passive abilities, I believe Neji is far more naturally suited to wielding a Weapon rather than becoming one himself. Accustomed to leadership with an objective focus and analytical behaviour- the type to look at something from the outside rather than within- he can most effectively display this practical sense. Remaining aware that even though the Weapon may protect him, he'll need to recall his own sense of responsibility to protect it and be cautious with it as well.

Meister Ability:
Clairvoyance - They are able to know their immediate terrain and create a mental map, and sense the souls within the vicinity. This ability has a one-kilometer radius.
