If You Only Had a Hundred Years to Live
“What would you do,” France asked one day, fingering his wine glass, “if you were human-if you only had one hundred years to live?”
France, who was at his most discerning when he was most intoxicated, stunned the rest of the nations present. He smiled loosely and continued.
“Who would you have spent that time with? Which hundred years of your life would you choose above all others?”
England’s fists clenched in his lap. Suddenly, he remembered-his golden princess, with flaming hair and a seductive smile. He remembered one hundred wedding proposals he wanted to rip in two, and the horrible ache left when a Scotsman rose to take her place.
“Elizabeth,” he said simply, describing an era and a person.
America sat, scratching his head in thought. He had loved all of his life; how could he choose? But, wait-he recalled the first inauguration. He remembered the man who had risen to take England’s place when America needed a father.
“George,” he whispered softly.
China’s fingers were steepled against his chin. The Asian nation remembered, vividly, something that had only happened a half-century ago. There had been bloodshed and violence-his family had been ripped apart-but there had also been revolution and change.
“Mao.” He spoke without hesitation.
Russia’s face was an opaque mask; he smiled softly at his former allies as his mind raced through centuries of history. Images persisted at him-four girls with bright smiles, a boy who bled. Being loved unconditionally, until he had thrown it all away.
“Anastasia,” he murmured, the rest of the family trailing behind her name like ghosts.
The nations sat in silence for a moment, trapped in reverie. Then England’s brow furrowed, and he turned to France.
“What about you? Which hundred years would you want?”
France smiled-slow, ironic, seductive. “I wouldn’t need a hundred years. Jeanne didn’t even live to be twenty.”
