MIDNIGHT NOOSES FROM BOXCAR CADAVERS
I'm going to see the Mars Volta on Sunday in Baltimore for the first time in over 4 years. Yes. They aren't touring with anyone else and the club only holds 1500 which is wonderful news. Last time I saw them (brian you will remember), was opening for System of a Down in some giant stadium in Ft Lauderdale. The sound was awful because for some reason stadium sound guys believe that any rock band wants and needs 90% of the sound to be nothing but kick drum so that whenever the drummer hits the kick you wont be able to hear anything else. I hate it when the sound mix ruins the show and not the band itself.
But anyway, TMV have obviously released progressively more alienating records over time and they know it. I still behold Frances the Mute and Deloused as two of my all time favorite records, and there are tracks from their last three records (Amp, Bedlam, Octo) that are incredible as well. But I couldn't be more excited because they are playing songs from all five records on this tour, and even a track off of the first EP (tremulant). Their drummer is one of the fastest craziest musicians I have ever seen, and I know that given a good venue the live show will be bananas, bee ay en ay en ay anas.
Anyone still listen to these guys? Anyone like their newer stuff? Opinions? Self-indulgent crap? God-like musicianship? A schmorgasborg of masturbatory ineptitude?
