it's been well over a year since i started listening to the most recent mars volta album "amputechture". at first i was very turned off by this album. i thought the intro track was amazing, and everything else was kind of painful to get through. this is a very difficult album to access. i sometimes went for over a month without giving it another listen just because i was afraid of the record. After the intro track, which is beautiful, you are hit with a 17 minute epic that just felt like homework to listen to. some really standout parts of the song, but overall it was just not cohesive enough to enjoy.
anyway, over the last couple months i decided to give this album a real chance because i really adore this band and i really wanted to understand what it was that i was not getting. right now, i'm sitting at my desk at work listening to the album on my ipod, and i'm LOVING it. it's not a record that you can just casually listen to. it's not a great driving record. it's not a great walking record. but it is a great record. they do so many things in these songs that i could never have even imagined possible.
if you want to just get the best of this record, listen to Vicarious Atonement, Day of the Baphomets, Vermicide, and Viscera Eyes. the mars volta are still one of my favorite bands ever.
new record in janurary. i figured out their last one just in time. amazing how fast they make this music. i'd pay hundreds just to sit in on a writing session. i cant even imagine what goes on.
ALSO, brian, chris and i are all definietly going to see SM on FRIDAY AND SATURDAY over break. Ft. lauderdale and st pete. so, come to one or both. itll be amazing.
