At that, he laughed. "I think they have bigger worries now. Didn't you know there was an actual super-villain downstairs?"

Helena tilted her head, smiling even more. "Is there now? Who?"

"Should I tell you?" He seemed to think it was quite amusing. "You don't want to guess? The person in question is just milling around, sipping a glass of wine, and acting as though it's normal to be stared at."

"I'm sure I could guess if I poked around down there," she said, chuckling. "Is it a Gotham-grown 'super villain' or a non-native?"

"I think it's one of the first few Gotham villains, actually. Apparently all the apprehension is just grist to the mill. Did you want to see if you could recognize which one?"

"As long as they're not in the billiard room. I am not going back in there."

"No, down on the main floor. You can go without me if you like."

"Don't feel like rejoining the party yet?" she asked, half teasing.

"I will, but only if you're asking me to."

"It'll be far more bearable with someone I can actually talk to," she replied, getting to her feet.

"Let's go, then," he grinned.

"Excellent." She walked to the study door, heading out into the hall and for the staircase.

They entered the main rooms, where several groups of attendees lingered. Joshua looked around, then whispered, "See anyone familiar?"

It was Huntress who mentally cataloged everyone she could see, identifying almost everyone there. She picked out the socialites, the old money and the new money. Then she saw a very distinctive man. Tall, thin... Oh, she knew him. Dr. Jonathan Crane. The Scarecrow.

However, Helena turned to Joshua and gave a sheepish smile. "Just the people I know from the society pages."

"No?" His face fell. "I admit, I'm disappointed. After all, people are staring."

After a moment or two more, Helena let her eyes settle again on Crane. "Oh! Him? Crane, isn't it?" After all, with some prompting, anyone in Gotham should know him-- just not immediately, as she was both younger and still somewhat of an outsider to Gotham high society.
