So one thing that I love about Halloween is that even though I live in NYC there is still that overwhelming sense of family and community. I love that. That's one thing I'll miss about this holiday from back home. I remember trick or treating around my neighborhood. I remember when I stopped trick or treating and when I became in charge of the candy bowl. I remember dressing up with friends and going to Astroworld Fright Frest. I remember thinking that NY, especially Manhattan, will never be good enough for kids because there's inherent differences about suburbia and urban life that are integral, i feel, to childhood. However, after seeing the Children's Parade in Washington Square Park yesterday and after actually seeing trick or treaters go to Spice, I re-thought my analysis of urbanization and still found it sad that they were trick or treating in restaurants, but still thought it was really cool that the whole community came out and supported one another. In the Children's Parade there was one point where a mom had lost her son. She ran up to the stage area and asked the band to stop playing so she could announce her son's name and ask people to help find him. The band didn't start playing until she found her son 10 minutes later. The entire crowd was instantly sympathetic and started looking for her kid according to her description (3 years old, brown hair, red power ranger). I almost teared up a little bit.
I love the random festivals. I remember walking around union square and washington square this past weekend because the weather was gorgeous and seeing the markets and fairs going on once again and feeling so happy. It's times like those that I absolutely love NYC. Maybe I wouldn't raise my kids in such a city, but I definitely wouldn't mind staying on for a few more years after I graduate to work or something. *sigh*
The parade wasn't as good as I had expected, but atleast I got to see a gimp jesus and also the joy known as thriller. I was also impressed by the schoolgirl and her diagrama. That was amazing! Other than that- a relatively chill Halloween. It wasn't anything as big as last year-- but still decent. Hopefully next year there will be more partying. Can't wait to go home for Thanksgiving and see everyone again. I won't be seeing my dad unfortunately, but atleast I'll get to see everyone else.
