Amelia has hit the "why" phase but it's a really cool version of it. She asks "what if" questions about the world. For example, she'll ask when we're stopped at a traffic light, "What if we could fly above the rest of the cars to get around the stopped cars ahead of us ( Read more... )

Amelia rocks. I wish J would take a cue from her. Sometimes the answer to her "why" is just "I don't know, that's just how it is." Or sometimes, "Why? Why not?" That seems to stump her. lol

Alex is in the cascading why stage right now. Yours sounds much more fun!

The other day I got a touch annoyed and said, "Alex, don't ask me why anymore."

She looked up at me, quite angelically and said, "What for, mommy?"

*sigh*

That's a good one. I tell Sylvia that she has used up her question privileges for the day. The conceit is that she has a certain, unlisted, number of questions for each day and that some of them cost more "points" than others. Particularly expensive questions are ones that she knows the answers, we know that she knows the answers, and she knows that we know that she knows the answers. These can cut off question privileges for the day as early as breakfast time, although she usually makes it to lunch.

Mind you, it doesn't stop her from asking questions, but it is very satisfying to answer her with "sorry, you've used up your question privileges. You might want to plan better tomorrow."

That's really cute. I'm no parent but I'd much rather hear those kind of questions than "Why?" all the time. I have almost no patience for repetition and hearing "Whys" would drive me up the wall! :^P

I'm so fascinated by the way kids' minds work, the things they come up with.
