I'd better get all this down before there's too much to post.
Carey's Grandad passed away. It was sad to lose him, but it was his time. I wrestled quite a bit with whether to go to the memorial down in Atlanta. I only met Grandad once-
http://heatherella.livejournal.com/509455.html , but I did want to support the family. In the end I decided that since I hadn't met most of the people who would be at the memorial, it was best to stay home. With my and Carey's recent engagement, I didn't want to turn Grandad's memorial into my personal meet and greet.
The memorial is the weekend aof the 22nd, which is when I'd planned to celebrate my birthday. After a little quick emailing and checking Yelp for a fun place, and I'll be hanging out with some people at The Gutter in Williamsburg this Saturday nightinstead. Consider yourself invited.
After my first week of studying for the GRE, I now remember why I didn't take a single math class in college: I make even the most elementary math problem infinitely more complicated. I'm sitting there counting every leaf on the tree when the question is "This is a forest- True or False?"
I got a happy surprise today. I lost the elastic I usually wear on my wrist, and my hair was everywhere. I made a messy bun and stuck a pencil through it, and it has held all day. I used to do this all the time when my hair was long. I guess I completely missed the moment when I went from mullet-recovery to having long hair again.
On Friday night, Carey and Sam and Molly and I saw Monsters of Folk
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monsters_of_Folk . Carey was running late and had the tickets, so I didn't find out until we were walking in that we were in row DD. I thought the rows would start with A,B,C and go through the alphabet, and then start with double letters. But DD was the FOURTH friggin row. The concert was amazing. Jim James sort-of kicked everybody's *sses, but I had no idea M Ward was such an amazing guitarist (and so sexy, too), and while Conor Olbert usually sounds a bit... whiny and emo to me, he really stepped it up for this show. Mike Mogis was also a fiend- his pedal steel sounds like an angel sighing.
Saturday Carey and I took it easy and waited to hear from Rob (in town from Atlanta for work) to see what his schedule would be like. He was done fairly early and met us at McSorely's
http://www.mcsorleysnewyork.com/ . I forgot that I usually only go there on a weeknight (its popularity and proximity to NYU make it fairly insane), but we ended up snagging a corner booth and having a fabulous time. Rob was knackered, but Carey and I were so happy to see him. We had a vague idea to catch a movie after Rob called it a night, but we ended up at Amsterdam Billiards
http://amsterdambilliardclub.com/ for an hour of pool instead. Let me tell you, I am BAD at pool. Bad bad. Like sometimes I miss the white ball bad. But we still had fun.
Sunday I cleaned. Cleaned and cleaned and cleaned. With Carey looking to move in, and studying at home becoming a necessity, I don't think I've ever been so motivated to purge unused items, organize, and create space. Sunday afternoons are my absolute favorite time to work on my apartment. This week Sunday afternoon became Sunday night. I even followed up with laundry last night. Don't try to stop me! I'm on a roll!
