Now that I’ve seen Deathly Hallows Part 1 twice, here are my thoughts on the first half of that movie, compared to the book… I have so many thoughts I decided to stop at Chapter 13 for this posting:

Contains spoilers for the film )

entertainment: movies, reviews, fandom: harry potter, harry potter

I found the detonators so incredibyl cute - just like I imagined them :)

YES to the mirror. You can't get it without the backstory at all.

We had the voice-overs since our version was dubbed and people might not be able to read the newspapaer articles. I guess it did help the focus.

Amen to Kreacher's Tale and the whole Marauder erasing in general in the movies.

I WTFed at your first and second moments and laughed about the third (after I was sure they weren't going to make them kiss or something).

Other than that I agree with most of this (and I'm glad I got to see the film and don't have to avoid my f-list anymore lol).

I guess with the detonators it was just weird to me because I am really paranoid in real life about someone dropping something small and explosive in a busy place like an airport. I mean, obviously little horns with feet aren't a threat.

I think we see what we know/fear. I personally thought there was a lot of stuff that looked like Hitler/Nazi Germany in there (very much including the fact that Voldemort wants to kill any non-pureblood although he isn't one himself).

I think the Nazi Germany allusions are definitely in there- when I read the book, the "Magic Is Might" statue seemed overtly so, as do the "Blood Status" laws and trials- even the style of the pamphlets the Ministry was making shown in the film, I thought the font face and design was deliberately supposed to recall either Nazi or Soviet propaganda.

I actually disagree about the diner scene - in the book, Harry's under the invisibility cloak (which he also uses in the Ministry), but they left it out.

The Ginny moment could've been good, but wasn't. Just like the connection between Ron & Hermione could've been stronger, but wasn't. I blame Steve Kloves, whom I am POSITIVE is a Harmione shipper - he's always given short shrift to Ginny AND Ron, usually stealing their good lines for other people or otherwise diminishing them.

Still, as you already know, I loved this movie. And I even liked the dance scene, since it showed the friendly bond between Harry & Hermione, and involved him trying to cheer her up without having to say anything dorky.

I wonder why the filmmakers decided to completely leave out the invisibility cloak in this part of the film?

I'm just guessing, but I think it's because we'd either have to go under the cloak with Harry and see things through the cloak, or we wouldn't be able to see Harry.
