Word Cloud for TANGLED

I've been following Justine Larbalastier and Scott Westerfield's writing tips all month. One of Mr. Westerfield's tips is to use word clouds. While this is really more of an editing/revision tip, it's fun, so here goes.

My Worldle Word Cloud for Tangled:

What my word cloud tells us, 30,000 word in to Tangled:

1. Right now, Jen is the most-mentioned supporting character. I need more Danny scenes, more Miles scenes, and a LOT more Gavin scnes.
2. The word "like" is really big... my characters don't use valley-speak, so maybe I've used too many similes. Must check whether I need to turn some of them into metaphors.
3. "Looked" is a big veb here. Westerfield says I've gotten lazy if my characters are spending so much time looking at things. "See" is pretty prominant as well.
4. "Eyes" is big. According to Westerfield, "That may mean I’m relying too much on eyes for emotional cues, which could get boring." I've noticed as I'm writing that I've mentioned that Gavin's eyes are hazel a million times already... I'm not sure why I'm so hookded on this detail. The other significant eyes are Charity's and Stacia's, which are a clear, bright blue. But enough with eyes already! The other big body parts in the cloud are faces and hands. "Face" makes sense because I like to describe what my characters look like. "Hand" makes sense because touch is such an important thing in the story.
5. Why is "around" so large? Must check out what I'm doing with that word.

You know what word I'm happy not to see? STUFF! You could ask any of my English 8 students how I feel about that one. I've been known to throw (soft, squishy, beanbaggy) things at them for an overabundance of "stuff" in their writing.

until next time,
