We got the car back! Dad's car hasn't been working for over a month now, because it took a lot of money to fix it, but it's finally working now, and it's going to make a lot of difference for us, with the move and everything else. Luckily, the weather hasn't been too frightfully bad, for a Finnish autumn anyway, but we're all happy to have the car back for winter.
I've been reading a kind of half-assed novel, The Hidden Diary of Marie Antoinette by Carolly Erickson. This is the third novel version of MA:s life I've read. I prefer Abundance by Sena Jeter Naslund, which I reviewed earlier this year, so you can find it among the entries tagged 100 books that rocked my world. I'm not as thrilled about this one. It's written in the form of diaries (duh!), but with long periods of time unaccounted for, kind of like a real diary, really. What I don't like is the tendency of the writer to focus on the love life of a woman who did many things besides possibly having love affairs. At least these aren't the erotic memoirs, which have been written as well. Of all the books in the English language that might have been imported to Finland (although not translated), we could probably have done without the erotic memoirs of Marie Antoinette, and gotten something more worth while...
My parents love books as much as I do, although they have less time for reading, and we've been buying books like crazy these last few days. I bought Jane Eyre in Swedish, and one of the Sue Barton books, about a pretty nurse, who marries a doctor (favourites of my early teens, and now I have the complete set), and World History by the Dorling Kindersley publishing firm, who also publish the Eyewitness travel guides, and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, which I also reviewed earlier. All of these books came to about €30, and I'm happy to have them. I also got an atlas of the biblical world, and the 501 Must-visit Natural Wonders, which is part of a popular series of books. I'll probably not see many of the must-see places in person, but it's fascinating to read about them.
Another great thing is that my asthma seems to be calming down a bit again. I got an appointment to see my new doctor (the one I've been assigned because of where I live), and I hope he can give me recipe for an inhaler, and for some medicine that will help my breathing while I live here with the cats. I actually feel good enough to be able to sing again, and it's awesome:).
I also finished a pair of socks, and started knitting a shawl with the rose-coloured yarn I bought at the Farmers' Market last week. I tried another, more complicated pattern to begin with, but I find I really prefer something I don't have to concentrate a lot on, and so I'm already making good progress. I might finally watch a movie tomorrow, and knit some more...
Have a great weekend, everyone, and see you soon!
