I went to the pharmacy today and bought that other allergy medicine, the one that doesn't make you tired, and it's just as well, because I actually dozed off again today, after coming back home from my parents. I've spent most of the day just hanging out, reading, knitting and trying to watch Deathly Hallows, part one. It's quite a good movie, but I can't seem to concentrate on the Potter movies nowadays, no matter how good they are.
This day has been record warm, and we're still waiting for that thunderstorm. I'm keeping my fingers crossed... It's been a good day for reading, at any rate, and I may do some more of that tomorrow, if I don't have company. I just finished Fitcher's Brides by Gregory Frost, and it was really something, probably the most graphically violent book I've ever read. It's a retelling of the fairytale Fitcher's Bird, which is based on the story of Bluebeard, so there's some wife-murdering involved, obviously. Fitcher in this retelling is a preacher, and the book is set in the 1840's, when I think there really were a lot of preachers saying that the end of days was at hand. Wasn't there someone just last year saying that the Rapture was coming? And of course there's the Mayan calendar, that some people think says that it will all end this year. Perhaps I don't need to worry about moving or finding work after all, eh?
Anyway, the book is great in the way it captures the uneasiness and supernatural qualities of the original stories about Bluebeard. I haven't been this caught up by a book I've never read before since To Kill a Mockingbird, although the stories couldn't be more different. I'm always thrilled to find books that won't let me go until I'm done with them. Given how much I read, they really don't come along all that often. I've been lucky this last year, I guess. See you tomorrow!
