Damn it man; I'm a doctor, not a physicist.

So that was very, very cool.

I really liked it! And I'm pretty uninitiated for all intents and purposes, so I'm guessing people who are really into Trek were even more impressed (or, maybe the opposite depending, I wouldn't know - but there was quite a lot of laughter and bounciness in the audience, so).

Anyway. In no particular order:

+ SPOCK. Zachary Quinto was such an inspired choice for that role, he was SO awesome and brilliant and deadpan and calm and kickass and hot. I really liked him. And his backstory; I don't know how much of that was just for this movie or what, but I thought it worked. Except for the mom-in-the-refrigerator. *sigh*

+ Kirk was pretty good, and actually funny; I laughed at many of his lines. Props to Chris Pine. He's got good expressions and comedic timing, oh, and he's hawt.

+ Uhura - I hear she got more to do than she has in the past, which is good. I've only seen a chunk of TOS but I've always thought she was fierce and Zoe did well with the role. She's funny, too. I wish she'd got more screentime but she was awesome even if she was The Girl.

+ Sulu: Eeeeee, he was awesome, and kinda cocky and again, funny, and HOT. (see the pattern here?)

+ eta: Oh! Oh, Chekhov! *squishes him*

+ McCoy was really cool. And hot, you get the idea. And actually, his friendship with Kirk was a little better developed than Spock's just because it got more time. Which brings me to

+ Kirk/Spock. I loved the scenes we got to see; I liked seeing them clash and the dialogue and acting were great. I wish there'd been more is all, but it was very pre-slashy as expected. But it was like, clear that they were supposed to have this epic friendship but it didn't really develop - there was snarking and fighting first, and then all of a sudden the friendship was just there, because it was written or something. *shrug* I don't know. It just feels like they should've had more of a burgeoning trust by the end, and not be that close just yet.

+ LOL @ future!Spock setting himself up with Kirk, though. Star Trek's own Slash Dragon.

+ OMG HALLO THAR TYLER PERRY FANCY MEETING YOU HERE.

+ I actually found most of the character development and emotion pretty handwavy, but I don't guess that's the point of this sort of movie. It felt like it happened really fast, because the main part of the movie seemed to take place over a short period of time. But like, Spock's emotional outburst and subsequent rejoining of the team felt really fast; it's like he left the room, talked to his dad, and then walked back out to the bridge. idk. It didn't suck but it was just kind of there.

+ The reveal of the Enterprise at first was really neat. :D

+ The requisite gender fail. I'm starting to think it's impossible to have scifi without gender fail, what the fuck. Seriously, sci-fi genre as a whole: DO BETTER. THERE ARE WOMEN WATCHING. GAH. Why is the uniform for women at the academy mini-skirts and go-go boots? Hardly seems practical. And Uhura had to wear a mini on the Enterprise as well; it just doesn't make sense. And she would've been NO less hot in trousers. She would be hot in a trash bag, ffs. And I already mentioned the mom-in-the-refrigerator, basically there to provide maximum angst for Spock. And Kirk's mom, there to provide us with both maximum angst as well as provide us with Kirk himself and then we never see her again. Even Uhura was a bit of a pawn for the Kirk/Spock rivalry, but at least it wasn't too in-your-face. She was clearly awesome in her own right. Which brings me to

+ Uhura/Spock. That was surprisingly nice. XD A nice fakeout because there was all that Kirk flirtage happening, and really cool because I can see why she'd go for a guy like Spock instead. I kind of like that Kirk never even had a chance. *g* And I like how it was an established relationship, not some epic romance throughout the movie; not something you usually see. The way it was revealed was lovely too, with the little hints that happened before the elevator scene - especially the scene where he assigned her to a ship that wasn't the Enterprise and she confronted him about it and told him the deal. *giggle* He's kind of under her thumb innee; which is another reason it worked, because he's such a Vulcan and it's neat to imagine how they got together; I hope fic happens. The more intimate scenes were a little over the top, though. It wasn't perfect, because none of the character development was, as I said, but it was nice.

+ Overall, the film was a lot of fun, and I'd recommend it to anyone whether they've been into Star Trek in the past or not. It wasn't really a prequel, as I understand it - It's like an AU, starting fresh. The genre bits were okay; I usually focus a bit more on the characters than the plot with this sort of thing though, because I can't get past how ridiculous some of the science is, and this was no different. The action and effects were great. The pacing was ridiculously fast and I thought it might could've done with another twenty minutes or so to flesh things out.

+ Oh, and at the end when they said 'to boldly go where no one has gone before' rather than no man, is that the first time any version of the franchise has changed that? NOT a bad thing, mind you. Just curious.
