+ Cassie Hannah Murray as Matt Smith's companion? LOL, they must be trying to start wank. People whined because they thought Matt was too young and Hannah's nineteen ... still, if this happens, it might make me poke my head back into that fandom, like I did for Freema. :P ( Read more... )

For a long time I didn't want my journal locked...and I left it open as long as I could.

I finally decided to lock it this winter...one reason was because of the increasing number of troll activity. I was getting a growing number of random troll friends, or anonymous comments, and I wasn't cool with that. The second was, I was using it for more personal stuff that I didn't want spread all over.

Anyway, now that it's locked I can't imagine it that I ever had it open! When I look at some of the stuff I posted, I don't know what was in my head when I made it public. I moved my icons to a public location, but for the personal stuff, I can't imagine ever going back. The people on my friends list I trust, and having it locked protects you from the trolls or trouble causers...not to mention, those who take the time to read your profile and friend you usually are more interested in getting to know you than just a random passerby trying to build a friends list quick.

Ooooh. I have never watched Dr. Who (I don't really even know what it is) but I do love Hannah Murray. As you know. :p

I keep mine locked up tight for personal reasons. I use mine as an actual journal sometimes, and that doesn't need to be broadcast to everyone. Otherwise, I just like to know who's reading my stuff. The troll thing didn't even occur to me but I'm glad I'm locked up anyway.

I watched Doctor Who for a while. Hannah might actually be good for that type of show, she's quirky like Matt, but she's SO young. I love her too, though -- and so does a certain someone (who actually owes her a tag omg). >_>

It'd good to know who's reading. I guess I just assume the people who've friended me are reading and no one else would really care. But this may be naive of me. :P

Haha don't worry about the tag. I haven't been feeling super creative or Luna-zen lately so no big.

It may be naive, idk. I read a couple journals that I'm not friends with.

I locked mine for several months last year due to a possible RL privacy breach. I was worried that my adult fic would be discovered by family members. But I really hated having it locked. My journal hardly contains any private stuff that I'm worried for (and what little there was, was filtered anyway), and the fic - well I wrote it to share it, and putting it under lock is counterproductive to that. Nor was I happy to take the "friend me to gain access to my fic" approach, as I like my shy lurkers and felt bad about blackmailing them to come out in the open. I had to change my username to be comfortable unlocking my journal again, which sucks a bit, but it was worth it to me ( ... )

You've definitely hit all the reasons why I hesitate to lock my journal down! It does seem sort of blackmail-esque to me (just when it comes to the fic in particular, which I can't imagine ever locking up). It must have really sucked to have to do that, and yet, I would've absolutely done the same thing if my family were that close to finding everything.

I've had a few people follow me here from other communities and comment anonymously, but it's rare. The climate on LJ is changing though, and part of it's because it's growing so quickly. More people know about LJ than used to.

Thanks for the advice! ♥ I'm leaning towards keeping it open and just locking selectively, but based on some of yall's input, there are some things I think I need to be more careful about.

The random russian journals are bots which help people hack into your journal and the journals of people on your f-list so - not that you would - but don't friend them back ( ... )

Yeah, I think the biggest worry for me is getting hacked or having my family and/or creepy people in RL read what's in here. Also, I suspect Livejournal is now on this kick where they want to be more like Facebook and all social network-like -- and I like LJ because it's NOT that way, you know? I really don't WANT my ex finding this like he found my Facebook. *eyeroll*

(LOL, I think 'Hollyoaks with aliens' might be the funniest comment I've read today.)

The way to prevent getting hacked is to answer the new (and therefore not there when you signed up) security question for changing email, and to also make sure any old emails associated with the account are secure and/or removed from LJ.

The way to prevent being found by really stupid means is to make sure you answered the "find by email" question NO.

Well, and in your case, possibly not have a username that is identifitastic. ;)

I lock stuff about family, work, and other people's stuff they might not want shared with the world at large. And of course, any time I'm being wanky so FW can't link.

*snort* My username is pretty identifiable, I know. At least my first name is shared by probably millions of people. I actually really want to buy a name change token, but then I worry about people not knowing who I am anymore. :P

I've never F-locked my journal. There's just not really any way that I could because I'm not able to friend back everyone who has me friended. I generally post some personal things but it isn't anything that secretive. If I posted anything really private, I might consider locking those posts. For now, I haven't had any issues. That could change, of course. I think you should do whatever makes you feel the most comfortable.
