Since I'm slow on fandom life right now, I'm focusing on the other part of your random entry.....

Productive comment: iPads are shiney fun times. They make you feel like you're from the future ;)

I scoffed at them when they first came out - but then when I had some spare cash and realized there were good work related apps (I need to remember tax deductible does not equal free, but it sure as hell helps), I caved. It still wasn't a need but an 'want' situation, lol.

I love having it. There are a few things I would change, and if I were looking into it right now I'd wait and see for the upgrades in the new model, but I don't regret purchasing it back in November at all (unless the new model is amazingly improved at discounted price at which point I will curse a blue streak). I'm aware I mostly love the novelty though of the touch screen and the portability, but it's somewhat worth it for me since I have an 8 year old Samsung rather than an iphone or a crackberry that has similar features, ha.

Beware if you do get it, everybody wants to discuss and touch it. Including the most random people you come across in public, lol.

Damn you Apple, I'd resisted the allure of you up until this product.

YOU HAVE ONE? OKAY COOL. I'm so glad to hear you love it (and are finding it useful most of all, haha)! My guess is the ipad 2 won't have MASSIVE changes that'd make you curse, and will instead be a 3GS-esque upgrade like the iphone had. Not holding out hope for a USB port or front-facing camera or anything major but I'm hoping for more RAM and possibly more disk space.

Important question: what kind of accessories do you have? Did you buy a case and/or protector for it, and stuff?

Haha if I get it and random people come up to me wanting to touch it I don't think that will go very well, hm. XD

I'm such a sucker for Apple's bullshit, it's not even funny. It's NOT funny. I'm sure that one day I will have an ipod, iphone, ipad, Macbook Pro, and a Mac Pro. Pathetic. :P

If by playing boggle for hours on end, getting addicted to Cut the Rope, reading books, playing scrabble, sharing photos and watching videos, watching NBA games, getting news updates as they happen and obsessively checking sports scores while having constant access to email and internet you mean useful? Then yes, totally useful

In all seriousness I have found a lot of uses for it that I never thought I would, some productive and work related, some not so much :) I was amazed at how fast the space has filled up though, though most of it has been from video files I will eventually delete. I went with the biggest one with wifi and 3g, and wouldn't have done it any other way (if you're shelling out a shitload of money anyway what's another few hundred *snort*). Hopefully the max will increase, you're right.

It's a bit dangerous for me. I had a sony ebook reader that I loved, but using this as an ebook reader to I can buy books with a touch of a finger at midnight when I am bored without plugging into my computer no matter where I am. This does not bode well for me financially, lol.

I didn't buy anything too fancy. They kept trying to convince me to get a screen protector installed, but I didn't want anything that would decrease touch sensitivity, and well, I don't have little kids with sticky hands. The only thing I did buy was a case. I hate to support Apple even more, but I bought their standard case. I wanted something for protection, but I didn't want to make it a pain to access like with all those zip ones. With their case, it stays in all the time, it protects, and it flips open really easily - and you can make it stand up for watching vids/games etc.

I spent a lot of time harassing the people at Futureshop with my questions - make sure you do the same so you are fully aware of all it's limitations, because there are a lot of them, before you shell out a lot of money. Though if you have an iphone you're aware of most of them. Plus, of course, it's capabilities, ha.

And I totally leave the general public to discussion only. The privileged few who get to touch have to wash their hands twice, lol.

If you need app recs when if you get one, let me know :)

*talks a lot* However when it comes to laptop computers, my name is Kathryn, and I'm still a PC.

LOL for me, 'useful' means that you actually use it regularly - doesn't even matter what for. *g*

Although I do have some experience with the constant access in my iphone (it's like an actual APPENDAGE at this point), the ipad just looks so shiny.

I like my Kindle for books, because I'm in love with e-paper displays, and I'm curious whether iBooks will let you upload your own content -- I doubt it; I'll probably be looking into a Stanza app for iPad that I'd use a lot more than iBooks in lieu of my Kindle. *doesn't actually buy that many ebooks hehe*

The specs and hands-ons for the iPad 2 are trickling in, and it's extremely shiny for someone who doesn't currently own an iPad. But since you already have one, I'd say it's nothing to cry over/would be silly to upgrade it now. It's twice as fast, and thinner/lighter and also comes in white, also has front/rear video cameras. But that's about it hardware-wise. Exact same price. However as a newbie to iPad it looks extremely shiny, blazingly fast and if I can't manage to get one in white I'll probably cry for a few minutes, but only a few minutes because as slick as the white is the black makes colors pop better I bet, so either one would be awesome.

PLEASE send any and all app recs my way. :D

I'm happy with PC laptops for the most part! My lappie's getting old and I've had to replace the HD at the end of last year, but that wasn't worth getting a whole new unit. I might be sucker for Apple's hardware but they're WAY too expensive for me rn so I have PCs for laptop and desktop. (I also have too much stuff, lol.)

I don't buy a lot of ebooks either :) Except when it's the middle of the night and I can't find them any other way and I just want to read something new, lol. I would keep using my Sony, and I will for outdoor reading due to the screen, but I can't carry about four devices in my purse or take everything travelling...nice as that would be. However, I don't know what the file type is for your Kindle, but I know since most my files were in lrf I had to convert to epub (or of course pdf) which ibooks uses which is an annoying amount of work. I have little doubt you've heard of calibre for file conversion, but I'll mention it anyway ;)

For you having a kindle though, there is an actual Kindle app for reading where you can sync your files of course. I'd downloaded it since I wanted to (actually buy!) a textbook, but then of course amazon sent me a 2004 clinically out of date verion and I promptly got a refund and deleted the app. It's the one thing I think ibooks etc are all missing the boat on so far, is things like textbooks that would be amazing to use on the ipad for photos/scans/notes on text etc. The ones amazon does even give you the option of look like scanned pages *sigh* and ibooks doesn't really have any.

At least in the fields I've been looking at :)

Heh, I'm not going to cry over those upgrades. A little more speed would be nice, but hell, it's faster than my laptop usually so I'm just fine with that. Plus I would never use it as a video camera anyway. Looking at them now, I admit I really prefer the look of my black one, so that's all good - but to each their own. However if you get a case for it? You're not going to really see the colour except right around the edges anyway.

It really is a matter of when not if you're getting one isn't it? lol

And yeah, you're talking to a technology whore rather obviously. For example I have an mp3 player, two in fact, but everytime something like say the new ipod shuffle come out and I start thinking of reasons I totally 'need' something like that.

Of course I manage to stick with my super old Samsung phone. It doesn't really compute.

Yeah, Kindle works mostly the same! Mobi's the Kindle format but it'll read other formats and I use Calibre to do whatever conversion I need. I haven't had to buy a book from Amazon in about half a year, haha. I do have the kindle app on my iphone, but that only lets you read books you bought from Amazon, etc. :D

Man, Textbooks on the ipad. WOW. I kinda can't wait to try it with the kindle app if I'm able to find the books I need on Amazon.

*nods* I actually really like the original iPad's look and silhouette, though I've never held one before. They've cut the price by a hundred dollars, too, while we're waiting for the 2 to hit stores. But I love the slimness of the new one and that it comes in white as well -- I actually think the new look might suit me better for an iPad, but I'm more afraid that they'll do the same thing to the iPhone 5 this summer, as I'm finally able to replace mine this year. The way the iPhone 4 looks now is SO SEXY, so I'll be kind of miffed if I wait for the 5 and it turns out they've shaved it down and curved the back again so it looks like an iTouch. /babble

ahaha It's pretty much a definite, yeah. It comes out on the 11th and that's probably when I'll order it.

I have been wanting to replace my ipod too. I have an 80gb classic that's three years old and it runs fine but I've been having trouble syncing it lately. I'm never tempted toward nanos or itouches because I have an iphone already and because I love having enough space for all my music at all times, haha. But whenever they announce new ipods I always want to grab a new classic, hee.
