Breaking Bad 3x13, True Blood 3x01

I caught up on s3 of Breaking Bad just before the finale aired. It took dedication but I managed it.

And let me just say that I would recommend this show to any and everybody. If it had more ladies, it would be as good as Mad Men. (what; I'm nothing if not predictable.)

+ JESSE. It's not that I didn't know before now that he is an actual puppy, but JESUS, THAT KID IS AN ACTUAL PUPPY. HOW COULD YOU DO THAT TO HIM SHOW, HE IS A PUPPY. And no way does he come back from this. There's no doubt in my mind that he actually did shoot Gale, and it's more or less confirmed in this interview anyway. It's just a total game-changer when Jesse's more or less the moral centre of the show. And for his first kill to be a completely innocent man is just ... wow.

As for Walt, even though I find him abhorrent 60% of the time, I can't get too mad at him for this. He didn't even try to press Jesse into going through with it when he protested initially. It's NOT what he wanted, which is what breaks me the most. He's manipulated Jesse into a lot of things in the past, with premeditation, but that's been changing. He's been trying to protect Jesse from going off the deep end the way he himself has. I like to think if there'd been another way he would've found it. But from a narrative standpoint ... there wasn't much choice or time, and it's twisted and gutwrenching that it ended up this way. God, it just breaks my heart the things that Jesse would do for Walt -- and, since around 2x12, I think that goes both ways. At some point, unacknowledged by both of them, Walt stopped thinking of Jesse as a tool and he became family, and as far as Jesse's concerned, Walt's like a father he wants desperately to please.

BOYS. ;___;

I love this show; I love that it's not afraid to do things that could potentially ruin characters or even the show. They're not afraid to make their main characters frustrating and downright difficult to root for at times. I was really impressed by how fleshed out the side characters are as well. I love Saul and Gus and Mike so VERY MUCH. Saul so smarmy but so loyal and good at his job, Mike so genuinely terrifying but with an affability and humanity that makes you forget, and Gus such a formidable villain. Perfect match for Walt and at points, I even rooted for him.

I COULD GO ON. Truly brilliant series and a fantastic third season all put-together.

+ So that was fun! Not too terribly interesting but a good teaser for the rest of the season. It focused on setting up the main plot elements rather than getting deep into the characters - and since the plot elements are fairly lame... well.

+ SO GLAD PAM IS A REGULAR NOW. She's easily one of my favorite parts of the show. I love her genuine affection and playfulness with Eric (It was good seeing them in a serious scene too). LOVED her scene with Lafayette, she is such a badass. And I loved when she visited Sookie for the outfit ALONE.

+ I'm happy that Tara has Lafayette around, because the last person she needs is her triflin'-ass mother. GOD I HATE LETTIE MAE. But I think we're supposed to, lol. I've always loved Tara so she's been kind of hard to watch lately. I'm not one of the people calling for ~sassy S1 Tara~ to come back ... it's okay for her to have angst and flaws like all the other characters and for it to be depicted as important. But I hope it goes somewhere, somewhere in the direction of her getting some agency over her own life and learning that she's special without needing anyone else to make her feel that way. I hope she gets a break this season (eventually), and that we get to see more of her and Sookie's friendship. I hope the writers actually KNOW what they're doing with Tara, that they don't write themselves into a corner and then kill her off or something.

(and sry, but unless one of them dies I will never give up on Sam/Tara.)

+ Sookie Sookie Sookie. I've always been a fan. I think she shines best when she's away from all the dude drama, though; when she's interacting with Tara and Jason and just generally dealing with her own life. Last season she spent the whole time caught up in Eric and Bill's crap and not even IN Bon Temps most of the time. About Eric/Sookie: I know they're going there and I don't really mind/care, but I still think half-naked ASkars is the only thing interesting about their scenes - so far. I'm up for seeing how it goes. (I'm not exactly Team Bill either, lol. Eric is a liar, Bill is extremely paternalistic, and she's better off without either of them imo.) But I don't feel TOO strongly whatever happens. It's more that, like I said, I find her storylines more interesting when she's dealing with her own life.

I still love Eric (especially Eric), Bill and Sookie as characters either way.

+ Subtext. I hope the show plans to keep dealing with some actual queer themes this season. The Bill/Sam was sort of awkward but I appreciate that they went there and, even if it doesn't actually happen, I hope it goes beyond just titillation, and that the characters involved have to really deal with it. I also like that Pam is textually bi and I'm hoping for a love interest for Lafayette. Didn't think the "lesbian weirdness" line was that funny, but whatever.

+ I feel SO BAD FOR JESSICA. That's all I have about that. Can't wait to see where it goes. Love her.

+ The Queen is fierce as HELL. More of her please. I have to say I don't find the whole "zomg she's in on the V dealing" subplot to be dramatically exciting at all, but like I said, most of the plots the show runs on are lame, and the cool thing is usually the characters - so the show focusing more on her will be a good thing.

+ Where there are vampires, there are werewolves! IT'S A LAW OF SCIENCE APPARENTLY.

That's all I have to say about that! Bring on next week.
