two great films this week & i'm out of tears
The Elephant Man - 1950s
Pardon my ignorance but I only learnt of this unfortunate man's history lately because Michael Jackson was rumoured to have bought his skeleton - which was purely rubbish.
This man (I don't think he looks like an elephant very much?) had many tumours on his head and back such that he couldn't lie down in bed to sleep..or else he would suffocate himself. He was also severely deformed, had a crooked spine and couldn't speak very clearly. He was captured by this asshole who kept him in a 'freak' circus for profit. Fortunately, a doctor managed to provide a living space in the hospital's isolation ward after that mishap and many citizens were pleased that this particular doctor had came out to help.
What I hated was..boy, was society harsh to this kind-hearted gentleman. Stupid women screamed unnecessarily at the sight of him. Children teased him. Nurses called him ugly. I know it was/is inevitable. If we are to have an elephant man right now, society will bound to put him down. But how can people not know that laughing at a sick individual is a BIG no-no?
The fact that he could really appreciate the little things in life puts me to great shame. I felt like a greedy jerk.
Daisy - 2006
I am hating myself so much now for not watching this in 2006 when I could have. Beautiful cinematography (almost like Amelie Poulain's), touching concept and love story line, extremely depressing soundtrack that will make you cry and cry uncontrollably..haha, and the biggest bonus for me is my beloved jeon ji hyun is the main actress. She looked like snow white as usual...so pure and serene to look at.
The setting was in Amsterdam, Holland! It is now a must-see city for me to visit in life.
This is one of the best korean film ever produced (i hope), though I don't 100% favour the ending. Another character should have perished instead of the one who had.
Gotta go sleep now. Too lazy to check grammar. I've been awake for the past 20 hours..no wonder my face has turned pale :(
