I can't rightly remember the first time I picked up a rifle, I was young, 'reckon not more then five or six, and once I had it in my hands I knew we would never agin go hungry. I started out shootin' small animals, squirrels, rabbits, didn't rightly make sense to waste bullets on bottles or cans like some people did. I dropped my first deer not long after I turned ten and I was sure that there was nothin' more excitin' then that. I was wrong.

I don't know who decided that Strawberry needed a shootin' contest, it wasn't like the town was ever that big, or that it was ever the type to draw anyone from any place else to it. You couldn't tell them that though, and once it was decided to hold the contest, they needed to come up with a prize and bein' that most folks weren't much better off then my ma and me it made sense to offer a big Tom Turkey instead of cash money.

Once they decided on a prize posters went up all over town, I remember takin' one home with me and every night before I went to bed I'd stare at it, and dream about the feast we would have with that Tom on our table. I wanted to surprise my ma with that Tom, even at twelve, I was sure I could win, the only thing stoppin' me was the entry fee. I worked for two weeks straight to earn the two bits it cost to enter and come the day of the contest I laid my money down just like everyone else.

I don't think anyone expected me to win,I know I heard my share of jeers as I lined up for my turn at the target, but, they weren't laughin' by the time I finished. When you don't have much money you have to make every shot count and it paid off for me on that day. I never felt so proud as I did carryin' that Tom home that day and presentin' him to my ma, and the meals that came after were better then anythin' I had imagined.
