Gawd, I really haven't posted here in forever. There's too much to say and then not enough at the same time. If that makes any sense. But, because there are people here that love him, I thought I would share what's been going on during the recently declared "worst week ever".
On Tuesday night, sometime around 5pm, my horse tried to amputate his

It *IS* horrible right at first, all those thoughts of "what if", blood and stitches and horrible dangly bits, and the worst part of all is just like you said, seeing your horse so still and quiet there under general anesthetic...But then a couple of days go by and everything really starts to be alright, and you start to calm down a little bit. :) I promise you'll feel better soon, and so will poor Finn!
Can he be hand grazed or hand walked? (do you possibly have *time* to do these things? I know he's pretty far from home and work. :) I know that helped Loppy alot when she's been on stall rest. Even just an hour or two outside helped take the edge off. I don't know how much you want him moving around, but you can also try taking a large coffee can-sized plastic container with a lid, cut holes in it, and put treats inside and let him play with it to get the cookies out. That is cheap and keeps them occupied pretty well. :)
And sulfa is good stuff, if it was going to be infected, you'd most likely see signs by now, so try not to be too worried on that point. The Aluspray helps with that too. (I know, that's like telling someone not to breathe...this is your baby, worrying comes with the territory... ;)
Have you tried wrapping him, and then wrapping the wraps up with masking tape? Lots of masking tape? That used to work on all but the most persistant wrap destroyer horses at Fiesta. Oh, and best thing ever if you need to bandage a hock is a large baby diaper. :) Just stick it on with the diaper part over the hock, and secure the tapes to the inside and then cover with a bit of masking tape or vet wrap. Works like a charm, and stays on much better than gauze and vet wrap. :)
I hope that maybe some of those suggestions might help... :)
I'm *so* sorry that he got hurt, but hopefully the worst is over. :) You'll both be in our thoughts!
Get well soon Finn! And I'm sure that Loppy would definitely send condolances for your boo boo and especially for the stall rest. ;)

He is about 25 minutes from me, but I've been out there everyday since this happened. I have to clean his stall (he's pasture boarded), and my trainer and I have been taking turns wrapping him. I hand grazed him for a good hour and a half today. He was soooooooooooo happy. Normally he's pretty antsy in a stall, so I figured he would be insane by now. He's actually being pretty chill with it all. He gets nervous if he's alone, but my trainer's been leaving another horse in with him for his sanity.
He's not destroying his wraps, they just fall down. I think I rigged something up today that may hold. Tomorrow is his last day to be wrapped, thank God. After Tuesday it's just stall rest and SMZ's all the way until he gets his stitches out.
He's walking just fine, and putting weight on it. It really doesn't seem to phase him. He's gotten used to the wrapping and unwrapping, the alumaseal, the only thing he started to get upset about was the shots. He was SO tired of being a pin cusion! He's done with those now!
Thanks again. :)
