CHAPTER 47: THINGS THAT PEOPLE DID NOT KNOW ABOUT HER

The pain never stopped throbbing in her head since last night but Horikita Maki kept walking. There were a few times her steps staggered and she had to lean on the wall to support her. Her body was heavy and her sight became slightly blurred. Even though she was wearing a thick coat, still she felt cold and she did not know how many times she pulled it tighter just to warm her up. Without her knowledge, a guard came to her and bowed slightly.

“Konnichiwa Mrs. Yamashita,” the young man smiled as he greeted her. She returned it with a bow before looking at the man.

“What is it, Yamada san?” The woman spoke softly as she tried her best to give full attention toward the man.  Her throat felt dried and her lips parched. She needed to get home fast so that she could have the sleeping pills and took a rest. It was a tiring day for her.

“I want to inform you that the lift to your penthouse is not working. It is going to take some time for it to come back in service. We are very sorry about that.” The man told her as he showed the notice on the wall. At that moment, her heart beat accelerated rather than usual knowing what the man would suggest to her; something that she really did not like.

“So, you have to take the lift first until level fifty and then use the stairs to get into your penthouse. Just swap the house card on it and pressed the passwords as usual at the door.” The man added but Maki did not hear any single words the man told her. Her mind ran to somewhere else.

Stairs?

“If you have any problem, do ask me. Sorry for the inconvenience.” The man bowed before he walked away leaving her in dazed.

Maki did not know how long that it took for her to start walking again towards the lift. Her mind could not stop thinking about the staircase that she was going to use. Closing her eyes, she inhaled a deeper breath as she took the lift. Her finger tapped on the lift button written penthouse but it did not work like usual. Knowing that made nervous came all over her. Then, she tapped on the number fifty button and rode the lift with tense on her shoulders.

Frankly, Maki did not like staircase. It was horrible place for her because it carried a lot of painful memories from her past. Usually, she managed to dodge from using it last five years. To use it again today was unlucky for her. Unknowingly, her hands gripped her handbag tightly as she tried to calm her heart. Due to her painful headache, she hardly can ease it out like usual. Even the medicine could not calm it although she took some of them already.

The sounds of the lift opened brought Maki back to the reality making her realised that she reached her destination. Walking out of the lift, she realised she was the only in hallway. Nervous came again and this time it was worse than before. It was accompanied with things that she did not want to remember.

“You thought that I really want to become your friend? Tch! Hell no! I just want to use you. Just how Mukai is using you!

Her feet moved towards the door which adjoined the hallway and the staircase to her penthouse. Her legs shivered but she continued her steps. More memories played inside her minds.

Yes…Mukai Osamu never loves you. NEVER! Do you want to know why? Well, for your information you are just a bet for him; a bet between him and his friends.

Surprise isn’t it?

The bet is easy, extremely easy. Just make you head over heels for him and he will win.

Hahaha….I don’t know you can easily fall into his trap that easily, Maki chan. A smart person like you can easily fall in that trap. How great it is.

Do you want to know how much did he get from this bet?

It is hundred dollars; just hundred dollars.

See….even you are so cheap.

Her feet stopped at the door. Tears filled her eyes with the sudden recollection. Maki swallowed hard and persuaded her weak heart to shove the memory aside. Her mouth never stopped chanting saying she was okay and everything was fine.

“Yes, I am fine. Really fine.”

The words never stopped coming out from her mouth and Maki looked at the handle of the door. Quickly, she inserted the password of her penthouse and swapped on it. Instantly, the door clicked opened and the woman in black suit entered the staircase. Her feet quickened as she walked up the stairs. It was just a few steps and then she will be home; home where she can bury all painful memories there.  After a few minutes, she managed to reach the door. As she touched the door, a voice from her past whispered inside her.

You will never become a mother, Maki chan. Never…

Maki turned around and as if the incident that happened five years before, played in front of her again. Oomasa Aya gave her a big smile as she walked gracefully towards her. Her words rang loudly in her ears and she still remembered every single of it.

You don’t know, Maki chan? The doctor told me you cannot get pregnant again.

And that means…. You are a barren woman.

A barren woman who will not having any child forever.

Imagine that.

Your dream to become a mother will become ashes.

All of them….become ashes!

“No….no…stop Aya chan. Stop…”Her words were soft and she shook her head as the woman’s laughter rang inside her head.

Maki’s eyes went to the stairs and she could hear her painful cries from five years before. Immediately, both of her hands flew to her ears, trying to curb the sound from penetrating through her ears. Unfortunately, it was getting louder and she clamped her mouth from crying out loud. She could see everything which happened on that day. Everything….

“Help me....help me, Aya chan. Help me….” Her mouth never stopped saying the pleading words. Unfortunately, the woman in red coat did not move her body and even just looked at Maki at the top of the stairs.  A smile dangled at her corner lips.

“Opps…I did not mean to do it, Maki chan. My hands were slippery and I am sorry about that.” The woman, who owns long straight hair, said it pitifully as she walked down the stairs while looking at her.

Looking through her fringe, Horikita Maki bit her lips as the pain started to spread on her lower abdomen. She pressed both of her legs hard as she crouched on the cold floor, trying to disperse the throbbing sensations in it. Fear swarmed within her and she did not stop praying from her heart. She tried her best to ignore the hot, sticky wetness between her legs and thought all the positive things inside his mind.

Please save this baby….please.

Please…..

The woman stood a foot from her, bending her body and eyed her carefully. Heaving a deep sigh, she slightly shook her head and smiled. Struggling with her pain, Maki’s fingers tried to reach the woman’s leg, trying to get help. Unfortunately, she pulled away and stepped back. Tears filled her eyes immediately but she fought back for the sake of her baby.

“Aya…help me. Help me….please…”

Maki stopped pleading as a set of spasm violently hit her making she groaned painfully. Immediately, her eyes ran to her feet and to her terror, dark red blood dripping from between her legs. Cries came out from her mouth. Quickly, her eyes went back to her best friend. There, she noticed the woman was looking at the blood which started to pool at her feet.

“A-Aya…helped me. Help me! Please! Please! Help me saving this baby. Please! Please!” Her hands tried to reach the woman. Unfortunately, the woman was too far away from her.

“Help you?” Aya tilted her head and slowly her feet moved toward Maki. Hope flickered within the poor woman’s eyes immediately until the woman stopped at her track. A smile formed on her red lips and she giggled softly while shaking her head.

“Why would I, Maki chan? Why?” The woman raised her eyebrows with quizzical looked plastered on her pretty face. Unfortunately, it was only pretty outside and rotten inside. Maki shove the thought and kept pleading. The woman continued talking as she shook her head while looking at Maki.

“The baby existence would not make any different Maki chan. Between you and Mukai are finished. Plus, the man hates kids.”

“It does not matter anymore. Just help me Aya, help me. I love the baby. Please…please help me. Please help me saving the baby.” Maki made a pledge as she clutched her lower abdomen.

“No…it matters, Maki chan. The baby is not needed anymore. Just let it died.”

“NO! NO! Please Aya, don’t do this.! Please!”

Unfortunately, the woman just turned around and walked down the stairs leaving her behind. Terrified with the situation, Maki called the woman pitifully.

“Aya…don’t leave me here! Please, Aya! Please!” Her cries laced between her voice.

Still, the woman kept walking until she stood in front of the door. Before she left, the woman turned and smiled at her. Maki shook her head vigorously but she was helpless. She shouted for the help but the woman ignored her.

“ Aya!! Help me please! HELP ME! PLEASE!!” Still the woman continued her paced and closed the door leaving her alone there. Leaving her alone with her baby and letting he died. Maki shouted as loud as possible but nobody heard her. Nobody.

Her voice echoed in that memorable place and Maki could still hear it even though five years past already; still hearing it in her nightmares and it was worst ever. Sliding down against the wall, she bit down her lips as she cried bitterly. Tears streamed down her pale face.

“Why do you that, Aya….why? WHY?!!!” Her voice rang through the silent night.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Yamashita Tomohisa quickly sat up from his couch and breathed heavily. His eyes roamed around him and noticed he was in his old house. Quickly he ran his fingers through his hairs as he closed his eyes. He was having bad dream just now. His heart still beat fast and sweat trickled down his neck. Somehow, thinking about it made his hands trembled badly and his body turned cold. Slowly, his hand flew to his heart and inhaled deeper breathe. Still, it did not help it.

What is it? Why do I have bad feeling about this?

Yamashita Tomohisa quickly stood up and walked toward his bedroom. Gently, he twisted the knob and peeked inside. Nagasawa Masami was sleeping soundly on his bed. Slowly, he strode across the room and looked at her. Her face looked serene and she did not even flinch when he tucked the blanket around her. Relief washed over him as he realized that she was totally fine. After a few minutes, he walked out of the room and looked the clock on the wall. It was already 6 o’ clock. Somehow, he still felt uneasy.

Yamapi shook his head slightly thinking he must be nuts for being too much conscious. Masami was already safe in his apartment for the time being. Aoki Kengo should not be able to know this place since it was his old apartment during his college year.  Who else could he be thinking at this hour? Yamapi went to the kitchen and took a glass when the ring on his finger shone brightly.  That alarmed him instantly. Thinking for a while, he put back the glass and took his car key. Without wasting time he walked out of the room and locked the house as he left there.

Along the way to his house, Yamashita Tomohisa never stopped thinking any reasons to give to the witch for not sleeping at home. It was not a promise or a deal between them, but he had to sleep home at least showing how good a husband he is in the society. Unfortunately, he broke the promise last night. Raking his hair, Yamapi grunted softly as the last night event played inside his mind.

“I don’t think Kengo would find you here.” Yamapi told her as he looked around the house.

The petite woman smiled as she tailed him. It was his idea thinking that it was not safe anymore for her to live in her apartment because Kengo would come to meet her. Only God knew what the beast will do to her. At least she was safe there. After roaming in the house and showing her necessary places for her, the man gave the key to her.

“Just call me if anything happen, okay?” said Yamapi as he walked towards the door. Before his hand could reach the tomb, Masami quickly hugged him from behind. The action startled him and made him froze at his place.

“Stay here, Pi.”Her voice was soft as she tightened her hold around his waist.

“Just stay, okay?”

Yamapi sighed as he stood in front of his door. Due to that, he stayed with Masami for the rest of night. If he did not remember his marriage, he was sure that he would still be there accompanying her. And forget about the witch’s existence in his life.Shoving the thought, Yamapi entered his house and found the living room was empty. The witch was not there. It was still early but usually the woman was there already at this hour. Did she go already to the company? Quickly he walked toward the stair before the sound of opening door grabbed his attention. Horikita Maki walked slowly into the apartment looking terrible. Her hair dishevelled and her paces were slow. Curiosity filled within him instantly making the man walked down the stairs immediately.

“Did you sleep outside last night, Marina?” The question flew out from his mouth as Yamapi noticed she was wearing the same clothes and seeing her in them gave uneasy feeling inside him. However, the woman just ignored her and kept walking passed him without even looking at him. Anger flamed inside him. Roughly, he grabbed her hand and turned her around.

“I am talking to you, Marina. Just answer my question.” Instead of answering, the woman just looked at him with her dead on eyes.

“Why? It is up to me whether I came back or not. It is none of your business, Tomo.” The woman replied softly. Hearing it made Yamapi gritted his teeth. Yes, it was none of his business, but knowing that ambiguous answer made him angry. Calming his heart, he asked again.

“Just answer my question, Marina? Are you sleeping outside? Yes or no?” There was anger hint in his questions. The woman pinned her eyes and spoke softly.

“What kind of answer do you want, Tomo?” Then, the woman laughed softly noticing the man was at the top notch of his anger. The man was impatient somehow.

“Fine, I slept outside. Satisfy?” She tilted her head looking at the man mocking him. Somehow, Yamapi did not like the answer after all. She could see how he tightened his jaw and stared at her dangerously. At that moment, she did not care anymore. Her mind and body reached already their limits and she did not know how long she would handle it.

“Did you sleep with Mukai kun? Do you find comfort with him, Marina?” The man mocked her and Maki did not find it offensive at all.

“Yes, Tomo. I slept with him last night. I could not find comfort with you in bed. Now, I am too tired to fill in details about me and him, so…that’s all for now.” Maki answered him nonchalantly before she turned around.

At this time, Maki did not want to quarrel anymore with him. Mood was already not there. It did not matter anymore. For her, Yamashita Tomohisa was just a husband in name only. After a year, there will be a divorce between two of them, so it did not matter if she lied or not. There was no obligation between two of them.

“Tch. Great! You are going back with your ex-boyfriend after all. Good.” The woman ignored the cynical tone in his statement and started to continue to walk when the hunky man spoke again.

“Masami is pregnant, do you know that?” The statement managed to stop her. Still, she did not turn around. Yamapi cleared his throat as he raked his hair.

“It is my child, Marina. That’s why…I…” The man stopped his words as he did not know how to continue his words anymore. Being honest was the best way right now for both of them. She told about hers and he told about his. It was a win-win situation.

“I understood, Tomo. We can get divorce as soon as possible like you want.” She answered it dispassionately.

“How about you?” The man asked. He needed to know it. If they are going to separate, someone would take care of her, right?

“Are you going back to Mukai?” The woman did not reply and continued her steps to the staircase ignoring the facts that her husband shot her two bonus questions. The man grunted irritatingly as his eyes followed the woman till she disappeared in second floor.

Yamapi walked angrily to the kitchen and took the water from refrigerator. He drank the cold drinks but it could not put off the fire within him. Unknowingly, he slammed the water bottle on the kitchen table and snickered softly.

“Great. It is an easy way out of marriage. Both of us are happy with our partners.” He spoke furiously as his hands firmly planted on his hips. Still, the statements did not make his heart happy at all and he did not know why. He expected more cat fight from the woman when he told about the news but what he got was opposite. The woman was happy and he did not like the reaction at all. Hate was more like the right words.

Before Yamapi knew, his legs dragged him to the second floor. Inside him, he was burning and he was going to be mad at the woman. They are going to quicken their divorce because he could not tolerate living with the heartless, cold and…. His thought stopped and his feet slowed down his pace. In front of him, Maki was lying unconsciously on the floor near her bedroom door. His heart stopped at the sudden sight.

“Marina…”

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………...

The Narita Airport was packed with people as usual. A lady in her red coat pulled a luggage behind her smoothly. Wearing black shades over her eyes, she smiled willingly to everyone who passed beside her. Being used looking by others made her knew how to handle that kind of attentions. She walked gracefully before stopped in front of a man.

“Welcome back, Madam.” The big man dipped his head and took her luggage. She just replied it with a slight nod. The man walked behind her as they headed to the entrance. Once out, a car waited for her and a man already opened the door for her. She took off her gloves and put on her side as the car glided through the busy airport areas.

“The things that you asked me were in the white envelope, madam.” The young man in dark suit man spoke as he looked through the mirror. Her fingers opened it and a few pictures were in it. Her red lips curved upward seeing it. She whispered softly under her breathe as she stroked the picture before she crumpled it. Her eyes averted to the view outside the car as she muttered softly under her breath.

“I am back Maki chan.”
