monday i went into the city with my parents and my brother to see bob dylan. it was probably one of the greatest experiences of my life, as well as one of the best performances i've ever seen/heard. we got into the city early.. around 4:30pm and walked around for a bit. we ate at an irish pub called PD O'Hurley's where the waitresses were russian or something. then we walked over to the beacon theatre to see if they were letting people in yet, but they weren't so we waited in line outside. doors opened at 6:30-ish maybe? and i bought a
shirt and
poster. doors into the actual theatre opened at 7pm and amos lee went on at 7:30. he's a great singer/songwriter and his guitarist nate skiles is amazing- blew me away. we had excellent seats and gosh everything seemed so surreal! merle haggard and the strangers went on next and they were as tight as a band could possibly be. for me not being much of a fan of country music i enjoyed him and his band a lot, especially his on-the-spot marijuana song. speaking of marijuana, i've never been around so much in my life. this crazy ass guy a couple rows down was passing his ziplock bag around. it wasn't long before the security guards came down and escorted him out for being loud and disruptive and of course smoking pot. they let him back in though and he left after merle haggard. he had an "i love whores" shirt that he was whipping around. anyway, great performance by merle haggard and the strangers, they surprised me. bob dylan went on next. his set list included:
1. To Be Alone With You
2. I'll Be Your Baby Tonight
3. It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)
4. Visions Of Johanna
5. Cold Irons Bound
6. Moonlight
7. Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again
8. High Water (For Charley Patton)
9. Summer Days
10. Standing In The Doorway
11. Highway 61 Revisited
12. Desolation Row (fuckin amazing song, one of my all-time favorites.)
encore
13. Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues
14. All Along The Watchtower
he was simply amazing. he didn't play guitar the whole night though, he stayed behind the piano, which is cool if you ask me. it would have been nice to see him strum a little but it's all good! he didn't play my all-time favorite song ever though, shooting star, but it's okay because he made up for it by playing desolation row. if shooting star didn't hold so much significant meaning to me, desolation row would probably be my favorite, with girl of the north country not far behind. he completely changed the beat and sound of to be alone with you and i didn't even know what it was until probably half way through. he was so into playing his harmonica, too, especially during desolation row. i want to play like him. i'm thinking about going back to guitar lessons and also taking singing lessons and writing folk songs. it probably won't happen but just a little thought. anyway back to the show, i'm surprised dylan didn't play like a rolling stone, and i'm a little upset, but he has so many songs you never know what he's going to play. i wish i could see him again on thursday but i'm sure it's sold out by now and i think my uncle only has extra tickets to the shows on friday and saturday. bob dylan's playing again though in lakewood at first energy park (blueclaws field) with willie nelson and family and the greencards on june 15th.
