i was going to reply to your last post and say "let's go shopping!" but then i remembered how insane stores are (even thrift shops!??) so perhaps we should wait until after the christmas chaos. let's shop, pretty please.
i have many mixed feelings about our healthcare system. it is totally screwed. being a taxpayer without any type of medical insurance and not able to qualify for any government-funded medicare, i feel like my decision should be clear in wanting a single-payer system, like canada or sweden. but then i start to get paranoid when i hear things like canada has a higher mortality rate because the wait list for surgery is much longer, the better doctors move out of country to make more money, our country would not be as technologically advanced in the medical field, etc, etc. i don't know, once i look past my absurd paranoia of death and dying, i think it would be nice to have a government-funded healthcare system. either way, the u.s. healthcare system needs to be reformed.
speaking of primaries, have you ever been to opensecrets.org? it's insane (and fascinating) how much money is spent in u.s. elections. if you check out the presidential data, john edwards has $0 debt so far. i think that may be a good sign.
i would love to shop with you! how is next weekend looking?
thank you so much for this long comment, this is exactly the exchange that i craving! i completely agree with your mixed feelings about switching over to a different, single-payer system. however, it's completely immoral to have a FOR profit healthcare system. how bizarre is that? it is the responsibility of the government to care for it's citizens, otherwise, what is the use of trying to regulate other aspects of our lives? why should citizens of the US die needlessly simply because they don't have insurance or they are denied coverage? it's ridiculous! and i won't even mention how corrupt the current system is with buying off congresspeople, etc. ugh, it's just so depressing.
other countries have far greater health care systems and, although i don't think any one is perfect, it's time that the US implement the best and most efficient parts that most euro countries and canada use. they are examples of a better way with a much higher quality of life (i won't even talk about paid college education because that will just make me cry).
anyway, that's enough of my rambling!! :)
i will definitely check out opensecrets.org. thanks for the tip. i'm definitely leaning towards edwards since i'm getting totally charmed by his corporate greed spiel. but then again, he did work at a hedgefund....shoot. kucinich is the dream candidate but i don't know if he'll make it all the way to california. so it's edwards, then obama, and hilary, if i have to.
