Chapter 7

They traveled up north by car and then took the ferry boat over to Hokkaido. It was around 10 in the morning they arrived at the live house. The day went by fast as what seemed like endless tasks were needed to be done before the live. Only their styling took almost two hours, then soon after it was time for rehearsal.

Five thirty they saw on the tv screen in their changing room how the hall was slowly filling up with fans. This was the time where Kazuki felt his nerves tickle. He sat down in one of the couch beside the TV and restlessly played his guitar. Byou sat next to him, currently sleeping. Manabu and Jin sat by the mirrors on the other side of the room, Jin had their stylist fixing the last parts of his hair while him and Manabu was in a deep discussion about a game they were planning to buy.

Rui came in through the doors right then with some of their staff members and a camera in his hands. Jin immediately started to goof around making everyone laugh.

Then Rui walked up to Kazuki then and zoomed in his fingers that were smoothly moving over the strings, then he filmed the TV for a moment, the fans had doubled since Kazuki last looked at it only a few minutes ago and his stomach twisted in excitement.

The first part of the live went by smoothly. It was noticeable that Byou didn’t have as much energy as usual and Kazuki was sure some of their fans would notice, but it was okay. He knew they knew everyone could have good times and not so good times.

When it was time for the last song before the encore Kazuki looked over at Byou, who was supposed to give the signal to Jin who would start the song almost the second after the other song had finished but their vocalist stood and leaned against the platform where the drum set stood.

He immediately looked over at Manabu who just by eye contact said to just wait a second and walked over to his amps to get a drink himself, distracting the cheering fans a bit and making it look like they just took a small break.

Kazuki looked over at Byou as much as he felt he could without getting any attention for it. It had barely past 30 seconds, but the time seemed to go in slow motion when things like this happened. He gave him another quick glance and to his relief he had taken a few swallows of one of the bottles and stood up straight again. Driven by the fan’s non-stop cheers he turned around.

Kazuki sighed and looked up at Jin who nodded back at him and then over to Manabu who gave a calming smile. Finally Jin had got the sign from Byou and started the song with a loud bang.

By the end Byou seemed alright again, but when Kazuki walked behind him on the way to their changing room and he noticed how unstable he looked. They entered the room and were surrounded by staff one second later so he didn’t want to make a scene or anything. He had a bad feeling about this, but the vocalist looked fine otherwise so after barely ten minutes and a shirt change later they were back on the stage.

The rest of the live went as planned. They jumped together on three, and then spent a few minutes with the fans.

Rui and Manabu walked down from the stage, followed by the rest of them. Byou wilted a bit down the stairs, he held tight to the rail but his knees didn’t seemed willing to hold him up properly. When he came down the stars Rui looked back at him as he heard the unstable steps and his face showed immediate concern. Manabu also turned around then just as Rui had grabbed the vocalist around the waist and it looked if he had been one second late Byou would have fallen to the ground.

Kazuki sighed heavily as worry rapidly rose within. He followed them back to their changing room where Rui gently guided him down on the couch. Their staff came at once with wet towels for all of them. Kazuki took the once meant for Byou and walked up to him. Their beloved staff members knew better than to approach the vocalist in this state, so they attended the other members and left him be.

Kazuki sat down on the couch next to him and put the towel on his chest and a bit around his neck. He then gave him his bottle of water.

“Drink.”

Byou took a few shallow breaths then complied.

Kazuki leaned back in the couch and dried his face and chest with his own towel. He closed his eyes and sighed heavily once more.

The voices of the cheering fans was still loud and clear through the fallen curtains. Byou sat on the floor leaning his torso and arms onto his platform, drained from every last drop of energy. He didn’t feel like moving ever again.

Kazuki walked up to him and together with Jin they helped him up on his feet and back backstage. Kazuki’s heart was breaking, because it all seemed impossible. It was the third time the vocalist had collapsed in a short time, and it broke down the final drops of brave courage and will power he had in him. It was too much to see him suffer like this.

“Byou.” He said desperately. “Please sleep.”

Just then the vocalist turned around in the hotel bed next to him so he faced the opposite wall.

“I’m sure Yuuto just want a bit of space. We will hear from him soon.” It had only been a bit over a month. No matter how much he tried to convince himself that it was okay through he himself was also extremely worried about the sudden vanishing of their bassist after he left. Not as much as Byou though…

Byou let out a dry, choked laugh at that, but he couldn’t bring himself to say anything in a while.

“Fuck him.”

Back at the hotel, Kazuki and Byou shared room and although the vocalist was pretty stable again Kazuki couldn’t help himself to look after him, make sure he got something to eat and drink, make sure he took a shower and got changed then straight to bed. Just like numerous times.

He sat on his own bed, just a meter away from the elder’s and watched him lay down, noticing how his hands were still trembling lightly from the strain he had put his body through. He looked at the gorgeous face that was partly covered by damp, brown strands of hair that almost looked black in the semi-light from just one bedside lamp. It felt like they had traveled back to last year, back to those hard, dark times where it all had seemed impossible.

“I’m just gonna take a shower.” Kazuki said and smiled when Byou looked up at him.

“Feel free, I won’t run away or anything.” the vocalist said and huffed, not really liking how worried the younger looked. “If you keep staring like that on me I might though.” he teased.

“Ha.” Kazuki stood up and gave him a gentle slap on top of the head. “It’s just that you’re so pale you almost look transparent, I’m scared.”

At that Byou threw a pillow after him, since he could predict the other’s move pretty easily he had already launched himself halfway towards the bathroom. The pillow still hit him in the head though; Byou had always been good at aiming.

Kazuki took a quite long shower, and when he was finished getting ready for bed he hoped Byou had fallen asleep already. Of course he was proven wrong when he arrived by the two beds and saw his eyes were still wide open, just looking up in the ceiling.

“You should sleep.” he said quietly.

“So should you, and there you are.” Byou said irritably.

“Is there anything you need? Want me to give you a massage or something?” He asked and sat down next to him on his bed, ignoring his snappy comment since he knew the other meant nothing with it.

Byou looked up at him with a gaze Kazuki couldn’t really read. After just a few seconds he turned around so he lay on his stomach but still facing the younger.

Kazuki smiled warmly, happy to be able to do something about his obvious distress. He crawled on top of him and sat down straddling the elder’s butt. He guided his warm hands over the other’s tensed up muscles, sending waves of shivers through the body underneath him.

“Dude, I could use you as one of my strings.”

“I could use you as one of my punching bags” Byou replied quietly, his voice muffled as he had hid his face halfway in the soft pillow.

“You have punching bags?” Kazuki asked. He put his thumbs as low as he reached, then stroke them with quite some force on each side of the elder’s bendy spine, up over his shoulders. He looked down and traced his muscles with his smooth motions. He looked at how the pale skin was pushed up in front of his fingers as they moved up against his shoulders again; where they stayed put and gently started loosen up the tension there.

“So?” Byou asked and hissed in pain when the younger found a knot.

“Nothing.” He took extra care of that one spot.

Kazuki didn’t know how much time had passed but he got more and more tired, but he didn’t really want this moment to end. It felt so precious, so valuable somehow. He moved his hands up and gently scratched his nails over the backside of the other’s head, he felt the still damp hair tickle his wrists. Byou breathed out a lengthy moan of pleasure and finally relaxed completely. After just a few minutes he heard how his breathing evened out, his eyes closed completely too.

He continued to lightly scratch his nails down his back, then up in his hair again in slow motions. Feeling how he could barely keep himself sitting up any longer, but still didn’t want to stop, he slid down and lay on his side next to the vocalist instead. Up and down, to the sides and back again. He looked at the peaceful expression on Byou’s face and sighed heavily.

“So beautiful…” he whispered barely audible. “You’re so beautiful. Stop torturing yourself so much.”

When Kazuki opened his eyes again, he hadn’t even realized he had closed them, he sat up pretty hastily in the bed really confused. It was so bright his eyes had to get used to it before seeing properly. He was still in Byou’s bed, only the bed lacked the other presence and he had the cover on himself.

“Whaa~” he yawned loudly.

Obviously he had fallen asleep, again, and obviously it was morning already, again. Byou wasn’t in the room, so he assumed he had gone down to get some breakfast. The vocalist always did that…

The brunette let himself fall back in the bed with a soft poff-noice and he stretched out properly. He had fallen asleep next to Byou, again. Somehow he felt that he should worry or feel weird or uncomfortable with it but he felt none of those things. It was not like he had meant to fall asleep anyway… or was it?

The door suddenly opened and the fully dressed Byou entered with a plastic bag in each hand.

“Hi there sleeping beauty.” Byou said, his smooth voice teasing. “Or maybe I should call you Mr. Cuddle Bear?”

“Whaat?” Kazuki said and propped himself up on one arm. “Sorry, it seems like I just fell asleep…”

“I kinda noticed when I woke in the middle of the night with you on top of me, sleeping.”

“I’m sorry.” He mumbled embarrassedly. What an idiot he was for thinking Byou would just let this go like nothing. “Why didn’t you wake me?”

“You were all cuddly and shaky since you didn’t have a blanket on you, so you were just way too cute to wake up.” The vocalist said and sat down on the bed next to him. “So I managed to get you under the cover.” He put the bags down on the floor and started to put up bottles of tea and juice on the night stand, together with some food. He looked up at Kazuki then. “It was wonderful to wake up with you next to me, feel free to crawl down my bed anytime.”

“Shut up.” Kazuki exhaled and drew the cover up over his head. His stomach went wild and his face had gone hot like the sun. Stupid Byou. “What’s up with the bought breakfast anyway? Didn’t the hotel food pass your evaluation?” he asked through the cover.

“Nope, and besides it’s over twelve so the breakfast have been gone for hours.” Byou said and opened a salmon flavored onigiri. “Don’t freak out, Manabu talked to our manager and he wanted to postpone the plans for this morning. Apparently they want me to rest a bit more.” he said and snorted.

Kazuki pulled down the cover again and sat up properly this time. “When did you get up then, doesn’t look like your resting much to me. You could have woken me up and I could go get breakfast.”

“Why would I?” Byou asked and took a bite from the ball of rice. “I’m fine.”

“Right.” He rolled his eyes. “Straining oneself so much you collapse into a shaking mess is totally healthy.” Kazuki said with sarcasm clear in his voice.

“Oh, wait!” the other said then, suddenly seeming to be really interested in the guitarist’s mouth. “Open up, seriously… It looked like you have something in your mouth. Say aaa!”

Kazuki looked at him with raised eyebrows. “You’re retarded.”

But he still complied, pretty amused and curious what silly thing he would do. At the same time as he opened his mouth Byou stuffed the half-eaten onigiri in there. “There you go.” he said and smiled cheerfully at the silenced guitarist. “Much better.”

“Idiot.” Kazuki managed to somewhat pronounce after he had chewed and swallowed some of it, but Byou just grinned.

After eating breakfast they started to clean up and pack their bags. Byou came out from the toilet and saw Kazuki mess up his until then untouched bed, which he found incredibly amusing.

“What are you doing?”

“Well it would seem weird if only one bed is used…” Kazuki mumbled.

“Who cares, seriously Kazuki.” Byou said laughing. “You think the maid will picture us having dirty sex all night just because we shared a bed?”

Kazuki just glared at him. “I didn’t even think about that, but thanks.”

“Now I’m hurt.” the vocalist said smirking and fetched his bag on the other bed.

The younger gave him another look and sighed lightly. “Be careful what you wish for. Maybe next time I’ll molest you in your sleep.”

“Feel free.” Byou said and clicked his tongue.

Kazuki pouted, not pleased at all with where this conversation was going because the tension between them were too high. It felt like strings of electricity were connecting them, drawing them closer together and making furious sparks because of the high voltage “Let’s go.”

With swift motions Byou had passed him in the door sill, moved up close and watched him with attentive eyes. Kazuki was startled by the sudden unpredictable actions and was too surprised to act in any way, so he just stood there like dumbstruck.

“Do you like me?”

Kazuki blinked at the question, still trying to wrap his head around what was going on. Like him? “Of course I like you.” His voice was quite weak and he started to tremble from the tension.

“But how do you like me?” Byou asked, not in just a casual way but not too demanding either. It was just like, he was wondering. “More than friends?”

Kazuki didn’t know at all how to handle this. Byou looked so freaking calm it was freaking him out. More than friends? If the question was do you like me just as a friend… It would be no. He couldn’t fool himself like that, and he knew Byou knew it too. They had passed the just-friend boundaries long time ago. But what did that mean?

“Yes.” He finally said, his eyes desperately searching for something, anything in the eyes of the elder. What does that mean? Byou kept looking at him for another few seconds before he smiled gently and Kazuki’s head became more and more fuzzy.

“Can I give you a kiss?” The elder said even more quietly, the question made Kazuki feel like he was on a roller coaster. He nodded slowly and the same second his heart made a big leap and the sensation of the other’s lips pressed against his own sent shivers down his very core. He was kissed ever so slowly, but with such force he almost had to hold on to the door to keep himself on his feet. Slowly Byou pulled away again.

“See you downstairs.” He said as he left towards the elevators. Kazuki let the door fall shut behind him, but he didn’t move. He stood as a marble statue in the hallway and just stared at the wall in front of him while his head tried to grasp what the hell just happened. It felt so good, it felt too good. It was too good, but it was so bad. This was bad, so, so, so bad. This was terrible. He kept on staring onto the wall in front of him as his head spun with thoughts.

“Kazuki, what are you doing?” A voice to his left finally snapped him out of his haze. He had no idea how much time had just passed and he smacked himself mentally, he must have looked like a complete moron just standing like that. He looked towards the sound of the voice and saw Manabu stand a few meters away by the elevators.

“Are you coming or are you staying here another night?”

“I’m sorry, I’m coming I’m coming.”

“Are you okay? You look really pale.” Manabu said and gave him a thorough look up and down in the elevator. Kazuki wished that he could just turn of his feelings for a few minutes, because he had always been so bad at hiding them.

“What were you doing anyway? You just stood there for all that time?”

“No…” Kazuki said and looked away, knowing well that Manabu saw straight through his bad lie.

But, to the younger’s relief his fellow guitarist didn’t press on the subject. If he didn’t want to talk about it he didn’t have to, but he got Manabu worried. He carefully observed the other as they walked out the elevator and met up with the others.

“There you are. Did you get lost?” Rui joked and took the bag from the smaller man then put it in the van together with the other’s.

“Yeah.” Kazuki said and huffed, he didn’t really know how to act. “Of course.” He said and then got into the van without another word. It felt like the gravity had shifted and suddenly it was so hard to keep his inner balance. The world had tilted, and it was suddenly so very different.
