I think pranksters were putting those stickers on SUV's. I seem to remember a big hoopla about them appearing on yuppie SUV's in the Mission a few years back.
Who knows, maybe they are usually driving around 6 kids and carrying saplings in the back to plant on a local nature preserve. You can't judge a person's world-footprint at a glance.
Actually, didn't you make that point in a post ages ago?
Yes, that's true, I did. And, you and I both live/work in Livermore. How many of the SUV-driving football-watching Livermore clone people really are secretly running around using their big gas guzzlers to plant trees? And for that matter, if somebody could afford a late model SUV they could have bought a hybrid SUV to haul their 6 kids around in instead, if they really cared that much about reducing consumption.
It's not like I have a standard I'm expecting people to live up to for being environmental enough. I know some people need to drive big vehicles, or can't afford to buy a more ecofriendly car, or whatever. It's just if you're going to paste a "Question Consumption" sticker on your vehicle, it's kind of preachy, and I expect the person who's doing that to walk their talk. Honestly I don't see why somebody driving that particular vehicle with the extra chrome football logo attachments that you buy at the mall, is in a position to be preaching to the rest of us about reducing our consumption.
I can vouch for a few of the people you describe (no doubt a small percentage of the demographic), except maybe for the football part. I don't keep up on which of my friends are into football. aoibhill's answer makes the most sense, but it's entirely possible that no sense is to be made here.
I wonder how many trees are required to offset a tank of gas. Herm.....
