I don't remember a landslide like this in any Presidential election in my lifetime since I was old enough to notice.

This morning I watched the acceptance speech and I actually got a little misty-eyed. I think it was more the weight of the occasion than the speech itself, although it was inspiring.

At work we're all celebrating that we won't be forced to stare at big glossy photographs of King George and Darth Chaney anymore. There may be an unofficial photograph-destruction catharsis party. After hours of course.

I am of course disappointed in California for apparently passing Prop 8. But I am still hopeful. The tide of culture is moving in the right direction, and even if some people are not yet ready to accept it, they are on the losing side ultimately. I'm sure that if Prop 8 does become law, it will be subject to legal challenges, and will probably eventually make it to the Supreme Court, ideally in a few more years after we get a few Obama nominees on the court. I am confident that it could not withstand a constitutional challenge at the national level. Because:

Amendment 14 - Citizenship Rights. Ratified 7/9/1868.
1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

So this battle isn't over and Prop 8 may ultimately be a good thing if it catalyzes a federal constitutional challenge.
