Argh.
I do not want to become a website designer, I just want to have a frickin website.

So I've been using a beginner-type free web host which allowed me to build the website for Stone City using their little wizard thingy. It worked okay, and made a serviceable website. Except a bunch of functions were limited or disallowed due to it being a free ( Read more... )

We can get together and go over all of that. And by all of that I mean:
A) The tools available via the host
B) How to update the page I built for you without a design tool or at least free ware.
C) Discuss building your side project in a manner that you can do it completely by yourself.

Thanks. :) We should get together some time to figure it out. I don't know when right now cause everything's crazy with the work party, and next weekend we probably have a funeral to go to. But some time.

I think it'll do pretty much everything you need, and you can use the free version.

Joomla & Drupal are massive overkill for what you need, IMHO.

The only really tricky bits are setting up the domain names to point at the right stuff, but once that's done all of the content updates you can do yourself.

I can tell they're overkill, I can't even begin to figure out which bits to poke on those!
Google sites doesn't allow individuals to register. Apparently since I use THEIR email service for our organization's contact, it assumes I'm an individual and won't let me get far enough in to even find out if what they're offering will work for me. Irk!

HTML

A few simple commands will take you a long way. Too many people have gone way over the top in complexity and flashy stuff that just sucks bandwidth anyway. Even if you end up using programs later, knowing the basic codes will serve you well.

Google can lead you to lots of introductory HTML sites.

Where did you get your free beginner site? We need to put something together for Bakersfield Pagan Pride and no one's volunteering for web designer, so it looks like it's going to be me. :(

I've been using Moonfruit, that's still the current host for www.thestonecity.org. It's actually a UK host, but that doesn't seem to affect anything, and their site-builder tool was reasonably easy for me to use. There are lots of other ones out there to choose from, I just picked that one because it was really beginner-friendly, and besides I like the name. :)

The main downsides with them are that free sites require you to have ad banners, and there are some limits on file types allowed and stuff like that, but that's normal for free sites. Their main website is www.moonfruit.com.
