Storm report

Well, there was a request for news about the wild weather from the mountain, so here it is. Thursday evening the rain started and it poured steadily all night. Friday it continued to pour, and then the winds came. By Friday afternoon the wind had torn pieces of tarpaper off several of the roofs and was rattling the house and howling about the windows pretty severely. The creek rose so high that it not only overtopped the culvert that our driveway crosses, it completely submerged the roadway by several inches and spread out to, by my estimation, about thirty feet wide. The whole downstream side of the meadow in front, leading into the big pond, is one big floodplain and the pond is overfilled and near to overtopping the dam. dionysusdevotee actually went out yesterday and moved the truck across the creek, so that if the creek kept rising and we needed to get to town, we could at least get out by wading across to the truck. We were quite concerned that the driveway might wash out and the culvert end up in the pond, and we be stuck with no way of getting to the road.

The rain slacked off a bit after about 5 yesterday, and the wind calmed down by late night, and this morning it was partly clearing. Actually the creek came down again very quickly. We took our opportunity to make a trip to town for propane and supplies, which is why I'm able to post this (we have no computer at home right now, so no internet). There were a few trees down on the road and a section that looked like there had been a mudslide or flood dump, but the road guy has been out clearing debris off the road, so many thanks to him we were able to get to town.

Later today the next storm system is expected to arrive and stay through some time on Sunday, and it's a colder one according to the weather people. Up here it may be dumping snow instead of rain. Which would actually be a bit easier to deal with, since it melts and runs off slowly which doesn't overwhelm the creeks as much.

Winter is. In some respects it's hard to deal with, especially when your infrastructure is, um, marginal. But also I see it as a necessary thing that one has to accept.
