After four days of training and a few tests, I got certified for lifeguarding, CPR, and First Aid. I took the classes at URI with Andy and a few other guys from school. It was only a four-day course and it only took about 30something hours. Over all it wasn't bad, I passed the written exam with a 59/60 and did both rescue scenarios in one attempt. The first was to rescue a passive drowning victim from deep water with a backboard. I had to go last. I was the Victim for the girl ahead of me so when it was my turn the instructor was yelling my name as I was being pulled out of the pool. When I did go, the eap, entry, rescue, retrieval, primary survey, and CPR went really well. For the second assessment, I went first. I had to save Andy who had a spinal injury in shallow water. Adam helped out and it went fine; Andy hates being on the backboard, he complains the whole time and moans a lot. As for the prerequisite, I think it was the hardest. The first thing we did in the class was dive for and swim with a brick and then swim 20 laps under 10 minutes. I passed, but I think I did an extra lap.
The bookwork wasn't hard, 8 chapters of bla bla bla. We learned everything from splinting, imbedded objects, shock, and spinal injuries to emergency childbirth. I thought that it was odd how the only thing that made me a little queasy was using pressure points to control bleeding but imbedded objects sticking out of someone's eye didn't bother me much.
It was rather ironic how the director of aquatics taught the class to us and during our free time, we would comment on how sloppy his lifeguards working at the pool were. You can kind of tell who in our class was going to end up as one of those lifeguards that would be positioned improperly, reading or talking on a cell phone while on duty. I'm not going to mention any names, but one of the guys from chariho just adored these girls with fake orange tans and waterproof make-up. This guy was acting like a jerk-off the whole time... oh wait; he's a jerk-off all the time.
The group of kids in the class was overall a great group. Everyone passes the scenarios and only a few have to make up sections of the exam. Everyone as about my age or older. There was one guy mike who I just thought was a hairy 17-year-old but during the ride home Andy told me that he was 24 or something. "I just thought he was really Italian..."-Andy.
Lots of the girls were on the swim team with Yifan and Siliang and the guys were naturally in good shape and strong. One of the lifeguards that worked with us was really cute. Our instructor kept calling him Vincent but his name was actually Anthony. When I couldn't remember his name fast enough I would just think of him as cute boy. Because that's what he was. I think he's on the water polo team. He was about 5"8', very built, short and cropped brunette hair. he had a great smile and a nice voice. Also, he had crows’ feet on his eyes. I love crows’ feet on guys.
I’m so glad that I can have my vacation now and that Jay won Project Runway. I can watch the X-Files again and get rid of the burning chlorine rash all over my limbs and back. I think I'm going to cover myself in aloe and sit in my bathing suit in the other room.
