when youth comes of age

my sixteen-year-old sister's teachers are all my age. her art teacher prefers they speak freely amongst themselves in order to build a open community of sharing and learning. her english teacher wears shirts with the clash on them and talks about how she lived in europe for five years and knows everything about it (i picture her with short, dark, spiky hair).

more and more websites i visit are full of clever irony, syntax, and humor i relate to effortlessly.

"All Project Gutenberg ebooks are free as in free beer for anyone living in the United States: You may download all our ebooks for your personal use for free."

actors in commercials and other media look more and more like people i know (and are also in the same age range). music in the media is by bands i listened to in my teenage years. the people in bands i respect most look like kids in my first year dorm. the people i call at other companies sound like fun dinner companions. my friends are graduate students - some will become professionals by the end of this year. all of a sudden, i'm noticing different business models and discussing them with friends. the idea of a retirement plan sounds good.

i bought life insurance three months ago.

i don't know where i'm going with these associations, i barely even know if i intended any sort of recapitulative phrase that ties it all up nice and neat.

but,

somehow,

my impact on and view of the world seem to have a little bit more weight to them. it feels like a ball at the top of a peak on the verge of falling. all i need is push.

inertia can be a damn bother.
