Phoenix: Mickey's Birthday Party

When I finally got back from winning the competition with Heaven, we got ready for Mickey's 20th birthday party. She may have a year left, but that wasn't going to stop her from using me to buy the booze. I agreed with her only if she stayed at home the whole night. She said that she would and I told her that I would have my eyes on her. When the night of July 2nd came around, we were ready. She was so excited- she had never had a birthday party as big as this one before and she made sure she was dressed to the T with her short pink mini dress. She even bought me a new shirt as well.

I grimaced a bit, looking at the white halter top I guess she thought would suit me. I wasn't used to wearing this as I didn't have a lot of those tops in my wardrobe. I turned turn then in the mirror, starting to admire how the top showed off the creamy caramel skin of my back almost shamelessly. I shrugged, looking I looked ok enough and after putting on my snug jeans and slipping on a pair of white flats, I curled my hair and headed downstairs, already hearing some music playing.

We had a friend of Mickey's who was the DJ, we had decorations and alcohol everywhere and our house was going to be full to the brim. Rory came earlier to help us with the party and so far she was the only person who I knew was here out of our group. But Mickey had other plans. I frowned in confusion seeing her standing on the porch and frowning herself as if she was looking for somebody. "Who are you looking for, babe?" I asked, genuinely wanting to know.

"They should be here already..." she mumbled out, not exactly to me. I told her I didn't understand and she then jumped suddenly exclaiming, "They're here! They're here!" I glanced up and saw a black Lexus coming down the dirt road. The driver's side window came down and I gasped seeing a familiar face. "Hola, mi bonitas rosas!" a voice called out to us. "Caesar!" Mickey and I yelled out in joy. My best friend jumped from the stairs and ran towards the now parked car. Rory peeked out and after she saw us running and realized who it was, screamed out and followed me as I ran as well. As I ran up, the doors of the passenger side and back seat opened and two other familiar mocha faces beamed at us. "Jade! Joey!" I greeted. My heart thumped with such happiness that only my friends could put in me.

Caesar quickly got out of his car and gathered the rocket-like Mickey into his arms for a hug. I passed them and ran into Jade's open arms. We giggled as we savored our embrace together. "Girl, what are you doing here?" I asked, tears brimming my eyes. "We didn't want to miss the wild child's birthday! You know how she parties." Jada chuckled out. I nodded and then felt a strong hand on my shoulder. Turning, I saw Joey's wide grin as he said, "We wouldn't miss it for the world." I turned from Jade to hug Joey, noticing how proud he looked in his Marine fatigues.

His dog tags resounded against one another and I couldn't have been more prouder myself. "You got leave to come here, Joey?" I asked him. "Yeah, for a couple of days. I leave the day after the 4th." I smiled and then barely had enough time to move out of the way as Rory launched herself at Joey. "Mmm...hello, darlin'." He greeted, stroking her red hair. Rory smiled at him and said, "I missed you, soldier."

I left to give the two some time to themselves and then motioned for the others to come in. They did and after a while our other guests arrived too. The music was rocking, there were dancing feet everywhere and the booze was definitely being used. I was surprised though that Mickey didn't really drink a lot. She was just happy being around people she knew and loved. I was happy for her. "So...loving your birthday party?" I asked her in the kitchen. "Can't you tell?" She exclaimed, wrapping her arms around me. I laughed as she kissed my cheek. "Thank you for this." I smiled at her. "Anytime, Mickey Mouse." "There's only one thing missing..." She said, looking around. I frowned. There were more surprises?

"HELLO? Where's my sexy birthday girl?!" I recognized Josh's voice and so did Mickey. "Yay! They're here!" I followed Mickey with my eyes seeing Josh walk into the house first, catching Mickey in his arms and as he carried her, wrapped her legs around his waist, giving her a quick kiss. "You're having quite the party, baby girl! My kind of scene!" Mickey giggled and kissed his cheek. "That's why I invited you!" I smiled at them and then felt my breath leave me a bit, seeing Chaison walk inside wearing a dark green short sleeved dress shirt and dark blue jeans. He looked around the house and somehow immediately met my eyes. We stared for a while before he smirked at me, tipping his cowboy hat at me.

I didn't smile back, just nodded in greeting and headed past them and outside to where Caesar was standing by the porch stairs, smoking a cigarette. "Hey you." I said coming next to him. He smiled and said, "Fire...having a good time in there?" I smiled, giving him an honest answer. "Well, Mic is having a better time, I'm sure." Caesar chuckled and I asked, "How is the traveling going?" He grinned. "Great!"

"Where are you guys traveling around now?"

"We got through with South America...great area by the way. Soon we'll be going to Europe."

"You are so lucky, Cae. I wish I could travel like that."

"Yeah, but I miss you guys a lot too while I'm gone. I wish I could have you all there with me."

"We know. But you have fun and keep sending us souvenirs. Make sure you tell your dad I said hi."

Caesar said that he would and put his arm over my shoulder as we noticed a black Cadillac coming down my driveway. "Who is that?" I said, in confusion. Caesar shrugged saying, "Maybe somebody was a bit late." I kept watching and then felt Caesar leave me, heading up the stairs. "I'm going inside. I want to see if your food is as good as everybody says." I winked my promise to him and he smiled back , then frowned saying, "Ah, hell." I turned just in time to hear, "Well, damn. Look what the years have done to you, girl." I found myself face to face with my ex-boyfriend, Curtis. My mood instantly dampened and I gave him a glare.

"What are you doing here, Curtis?" Curtis sniffed, and flashed me a grill covered smile saying, "You know information leaks in Prescott. Heard about the party and I wanted to see Mickey...and you know, you too." I wrinkled my nose at his explanation as he came closer. "Damn, you lookin' good, Phoenix. Colored your hair and everything, huh?" I nearly shuddered in disgust, feeling his hand in my hair and smacked it away saying, "Yeah and it would look a lot better if you didn't have your hand in it." Curtis was taken aback a bit, asking, "Aw...it's like that?"

Caesar scoffed at Curtis then said, "Come on, baby girl. Let's go in and party." I nodded. "Go on in. I'm coming." Caesar nodded and after giving Curtis a hard stare walked inside. I stared at Curtis as well before turning without a word and walking up my porch stairs. I then felt Curtis grab my hand and watched as he came up, putting his hand on my bare back. "Curtis..." I started, stifling my growl. "Let go of me." Curtis refused saying. "Come on, Phoenix. Don't be like that."

I wrenched my body away from his hands exclaiming, "How did you think this meeting was going to be?"

Curtis was confused. "What you mean?"

Oh, I couldn't believe this. "The way you treated me last time you were at my ranch."

Curtis looked up in thought, then grinned goofy like.

"Girl, that was three years ago! I don't remember that."

I pursed my lips together in annoyance and nodded in understanding. "Oh, really? Let me give you a reminder: 'I can't be with no virgin. You heard me?'"

Curtis gave out a laugh, covering his mouth. "Aw damn...I did say that, huh?" I nodded. "Well, damn...you so fine now girl, somebody must have popped that cherry by now."

Blown. My mind was completely blown by the audacity of the man in front of me. All I could do was stare and blink at him. I guess the silence was enough for him because he asked, "You still a virgin? Shit, when you gonna let somebody fuck you? Hell, never mind that...I can do it for you."

I closed my eyes and slowly shook my head saying, "Some things never change." Curtis frowned. "What you mean?" I opened my eyes; feeling flames pouring out of them. "How dare you come to my house uninvited, asking for sex?"

"Oh, come on now, girl..."

"I don't know which whore you're looking for, but you might want to check downtown on a corner because it sure as hell isn't me!"

Curtis tried to pull me close again, but I stopped him, pointing at the end of my driveway. "Go home." "Phoenix, come on now. Don't you want some of this dick?" Curtis pleaded. I was too pissed now. "Get off my fucking property, Curtis! Don't you come back, either!" Curtis finally took the hint, his face turning into a deep scowl. "Man, fuck you! Didn't want to be at this stupid ass party anyway."

"Well, get going then!" I yelled, watching him go back to his car where his friend was waiting and smoking a joint. Curtis got to his car and yelled, "Man, you fuckin pathetic! You twenty-one and still a damn virgin? Who the hell is going to want your ass other than me? Huh?"

I rolled my eyes and yelled back, "Get the fuck on, pothead! I didn't beg for it and you don't have to worry about me begging you ever!" Curtis flipped me off and then after getting in the car, drove off like his damn life depended on it.

I glared after him and after his car was out of sight, looked up at the sunset streaked sky and sighed. As much as I stood up for myself, that last blow he gave me, still hurt. I hugged my arms to myself, nearly digging my nails into my skin. Instead, I shook my head to clear my mind and headed back inside. There was no way I was going to let that ass ruin my night. I did the only thing I knew. I grabbed a bottle of beer, slugged down a few gulps then yelled,

"YEAH! LET'S PARTY HARD!"
