The English Major In Me Is Hulking Out.

May 04, 2012 02:52

I am well aware that the internet is NOT the place for an English major to chill comfortably. I get that...

BUT WHAT I DONT GET IS WHY EVERYBODY SEEMS TO BE ABSOLUTELY REPELLING ANY SENSE OF GRAMMAR LATELY?!?!

I'm sorry if I sound mean, but fucks sake, I can forgive a 'too, to, two' or 'your, you're' mix up. I can EASILY forgive misspelled words because I suck at spelling too sometimes!

But fucks sake man. I've had it up to HERE *gestures to SKY* with people who are native english speakers, have at LEAST made it through middle school and therefore know better, and who are GENERALLY intelligent beings (at least the ones I know, the ones I DON'T know, I assume are just stupid, it makes my life easier) making this ONE mistake that like... it isn't even explainable.

Tumblr post: "As supposed to swear words"
LJ fanfiction: "a lot of grey shades as supposed to black and white"
Archiveofourown comment: "NORMAL stories, as supposed to Crossovers"
Random blog I stumbled upon: "at 3am as supposed to 4am?"

.... and these aren't isolated, fuck no, these are damn near COMMON occurances and it's driving me crazy, man.

That doesn't even make SENSE!

Supposed To= "meant to"
Suppose= assume, past tense 'supposed'= assumed

WHY? Why would someone even IMAGINE that that makes sense? People aren't stupid. And Suppose/supposed is a VERY common word.

So, once and for all, your DAILY grammar and usage lesson from Chelsea:

"at 3am as OPPOSED to 4am"

Oppose=the state of being against
"As opposed to"= 'instead of'

grrr!, stupidity!!!, what is this fuckery?!, omg, english
