After speaking with (not) my advisor today and I've been thinking lately about swapping my major to foreign language, so I asked her about it (she is the foreign language teacher too, lmao). I HAVEN'T officially changed my major, I won't until after I take my first spanish class and make SURE I want to major in it (its the only foreign language my college offers... lame), but an English degree is useless without going on to be a teacher, you know? Bilingual speakers have SO many more opportunities for jobs. Especially down here in the south where there is a great demand for spanish speaking americans.
I still want to go on to a media arts school, BUT at least with a foreign language degree, I've got something to fall back on.
AND guess what!
We worked out a schedule for the rest of my time here that will- wait for it- have me double majored and graduating with TWO AA degrees!!!
... Sure, it'll take four years and I'm only taking like... 3 extra classes than I need for my English degree (English degree requires I take half of the Spanish courses anyhow) BUT instead of graduating with one degree in 3.5 years, I'm gonna be graduating with two AA degrees in 4 years... nifty, huh?!?
I've never taken Spanish, BUT I took both Latin and French in highschool and with a Latin base to build on, and the fact I took french VOLUNTARILY just for fun and passed with grades all higher than 95 in that one, Spanish shouldn't be that hard. I'm good at languages and the Latin helps me already recognize a lot of the stuff I'll be facing.
I only REALLY wish I could get my degree in French, BUT because we're a small college in rural Georgia with a high hispanic population, Spanish is all that is offered.
I ISH HAPPY NOW!!! *dances*
And really only have to spend so much time on it because this fall I can only find 3 classes I need offered at times and on this campus, then the Spring of 2012 is the same, only 3. Then summer '12 I'll go ahead and take Spanish 2 while it's offered, then Fall of '12 I'll take Inter. Spanish 1 and one of my remaining lit classes, then in Spring of 2013 I'll take Inter. Spanish 2 and my last two lit classes.
THEN I WILL HAVE TWO DEGREES!!! Sure, it sounds more impressive than it is, but IDC!!! *dances*
I have a PLAN for the first time in EVER!!
**note, after Spring of 2013 I have no clue what I'll do with my life... but UNTIL then, WOO!**
college,
squee!,
yay!!!
