Brendon followed close behind Ville and Linde, carefully observing every move Linde made. Every time he pointed to something indicating Bill may have gone past, Brendon put it to memory. After a dangerous slide down a gravel face from the train tracks, they had walked in back and forth arcs until Linde found a footprint. They had been following a trail of broken limbs and flattened plants for a while.
Brendon, however, stopped. “Oh no.” he said, and everybody turned to look at him. They followed his line of sight and saw the body of an animal laying on a rock, its neck obviously broken.
Linde walked over and knelt down. He looked up. “It was slammed into the tree. Definitely William.” He said, but looked up. “There’s also blood on the rocks here, though. And coyotes don’t travel alone.” He said.
Gabe gasped and reached out for Travis’s hand, only to feel his hands shaking. Ville looked alarmed. “William’s stronger than that.” He said definitely. “Come on, we can find him.” He said.
They looked around until they found the obvious trail of debris where William had broken twigs and trampled through mud and plants. They followed the trail until they came to a clearing. Ville broke into a jog, spotting blood on one of the rocks in the center of the field. They all ran to keep up, only to stop as Ville stood there, looking at the small blood stain. He looked at Linde, who walked around. “Seems like he sat here for a while.” He said, then looked at the blood, then the muddy footprints scraped onto the rock. “The blood’s dry but the mud isn’t.” he said, showing the mud smeared on his fingers. “He hasn’t been gone more than a few hours.” He said. “Come on!”
He took off at a jog. Ville nodded. “If he’s injured we might can catch up with him.” He said, and they all tried to keep up.

William was panting, only to let out a soft cry of despair as he got to a point where the river dropped off into a waterfall. William crawled out on the rocks carefully, only to fear tears fill his eyes as he realized there was no way down. He walked up into the woods on either side of the river, but there was no way down, it was just a sheer cliff on both sides with treacherous rock formations as far as he could find without going too far from the river. He walked back to the top of the waterfall and let out a soft sob as he realized he had reached a dead end.
He drank more water and then knew he had to go off into the woods, leaving the river. He was weak but he knew he had to clamber up the rocky outcroppings on either side of him into the forest. William started in, finding it increasingly difficult and tiring to climb. He came to one boulder that he tried to climb up but just couldn’t get up the side. He slid down, crying silently. He sat with his back against the rock and put his hands over his face, crying harder. He had never been more exhausted, in more pain, or more afraid in his whole life. William let his sobs build until he let out a scream of anguish. He carefully crawled to a smaller boulder beside him. He heaved himself onto it, sobbing. He knew he had to keep going or he would die. He looked up at the rocks beside it and painfully pulled himself to his feet. He fell forward onto the rocks and pulled as hard as he could, dragging himself along carefully. He was crying and his muscles ached so bad they shook. He got to the top, only to slip on a mossy rock and tumble over the edge. He landed about eight feet down in a small alcove created by the rocks. He sobbed as his back throbbed from his landing. He curled up, wrapping his arms around his body. He huddled against the rocks, praying for sleep to take him so he didn’t suffer the night.

Linde stopped them. “Okay, it’s getting too dark.” He said. “We’ve got to camp here.” He said, and everybody stopped. They had been following the river, spotting footprints, for the longest. They were on William’s trail, but they hadn’t caught up with him.
“I was hoping we would find him before nightfall.” Ville said, sitting down his pack.
Linde looked at him. “Me too.” He said seriously. “Unless he learned to hunt, build fire, cook, or find edible survival foods, he hasn’t eaten in more than twenty-four hours now.” He said, and Ville nodded. “He’ll be incredibly weak.” He said softly.
Spencer groaned, dropping his bag. “I’ve never done this much physical activity in my life.” He said, panting.
Brendon smiled. “Well, if we weren’t hunting for one of my best friends, I’d say this is fun.” He said, smiling. “It’s an adventure, that’s for sure.” He said.
Before too long they had a fire going. Linde, being the nature-freak none of them understood, had already managed to catch fish with no fishing gear and had taken a pan from his pack so he could cook them over the fire.
Ryan had pulled out a jacket and wrapped his around himself. He was freezing. Jon sat down beside him and pulled him into his arms, letting Ryan curl against him. “It’s cold.” He said, teeth chattering.
Jon nodded. “I’m worried about Bill out here in the cold.” He said, and Ryan cringed.
“Me too.” They looked up and saw Gabe looking across at them from where he’d sat on a rock. “He’s out here alone somewhere with no fire, no shelter, and probably we clothes.” He said.
Travis just sat down. “Don’t remind me.” He said, wrapping his arms around Gabe, who pressed his face into Travis’s shoulder.
“Hey,” Brendon walked over. He hugged them both. “Look, William Beckett is a strong dude.” He said, and they both smiled. “He’s tough as hell.” He said, and Travis laughed.
“Yeah, he is.” He said softly. “I hope he’s okay.” He said, and Brendon petted his fluffy hair.
“Hey, you know he’ll be okay.” He said and Gabe and Travis just nodded.
Spencer just smiled when Brendon came back to sit down. “How are you so positive at a time like this?” he asked.
Brendon shrugged and look up at him. “You kind of have to be positive to keep from freaking out.” He said, and Spencer nodded in agreement.

Linde woke them all up at sun up. “We’ve got to get going. We have to find him before dark.” He said. “We’ve got to go faster today.” He said, and they all packed their gear quickly.
They continued down the river bank, following obvious muddy footprints. Linde kept up ahead. Ville was walked with Travis and Gabe, talking with them in low voices. Ryan looked at Spencer. “Dude, are we ever going to find William?” he asked and Spencer just shrugged.
“Could’ve been worse, the trail might not have been this easy to follow.” He said, and Jon nodded from a few feet ahead.
“Yeah, we’re lucky William was walking in the mud.” He said, slowing down to catch Ryan’s hand. “How are you holding up, Ry?” he asked with a smile, seeing as Ryan had been fighting to keep up the day before.
“I’m not used to physical activity.” Ryan said, and Jon just smiled. “But it’s not as bad as yesterday. Less limbs to whack me in the face.” He said.
Jon just smiled. “Well, that’s good.” He said, then kissed his cheek.
Ryan smiled then looked at Spencer pointedly. “Maybe you should wait up for Brendon.” He said, and Spencer turned back to see Brendon jogging to catch up, pants leg soaking wet.
“Brendon, did you fall again?” Spencer asked, stopping.
Ryan smiled as he and Jon kept walking. “Hey, um.” He looked at Jon, who raised an eyebrow. “I just wanted to say that-“ he blushed. “What you said the other night, I-“ Jon looked a bit awkwardly embarrassed.
“Ryan, it’s okay, you don’t-“
Ryan cut him off with a quick peck. “I think I love you too.” He said, smiling bashfully. Jon just smiled and wrapped his arm around his middle with a smile.
“If you two are finished, hurry up!” Brendon said, running around them to catch up with Ville. Spencer snorted.
“When he falls again I’m going to laugh.” He said nudging Ryan. “And you are so damn sappy.” He said, earning rolled eyes.
They all laughed when there was a yelp and a splash, followed by a soaking wet Brendon pouting from the middle of the stream while water dripped in his eyes. Spencer laughed but walked over to the edge. “Don’t laugh at me.” Brendon said, standing up slowly.
He walked over to the side, and Spencer just smiled at him. “Aww, come here.” He took his hand and kissed Brendon’s cheek “Slow down on the big rocks.” He said, and Brendon rolled his eyes, only to smirk.
“Hey Spencer.” He said, grinning. “Give me a hug!” he said, and Spencer screamed and ran. “Come on, give me a hug!” he cried, laughing as he ran after Spencer, arms held wide.

Linde stopped and when they caught up they saw why. He was looking down a waterfall. Travis gasped and Gabe’s eyes widened. Linde looked around. “The mud tracks are all over this rock.” He said softly, looking around. He looked over the edge and cringed. “I don’t see a body.” He said, and Ville rushed over.
“He wouldn’t have fallen and he wouldn’t have jumped.” He said, and Linde nodded.
“We’ll look up the sides here.” He said, then looked at them all. “Boys, we’ll split up. Jon and Ryan, you go with Ville and Gabe that way.” He said, pointing to the other side of the river. “Brendon and Spencer, you come with me and Travis.” He said, and the others ran across the river to the other side quickly. “Yell if you see any sign!” Linde called.
They started up, climbing over the rocks. Linde stopped them with a call. “There’s blood on this rock!” he called, then looked around. “Yeah, there’s a piece of denim snagged on this one, he’s this way!” he called back. Travis and Brendon ran over and Spencer stopped.
“I’ll go get the others.” He said then started clambering down the boulders and rocks.
Linde, Brendon, and Travis quickly scrambled up the rocks. Travis had to give Brendon a boost every few rocks, since he was so much shorter, but they followed the blood smears. “Why would he still be bleeding?” Brendon asked, stepping into Travis’s hand to jump up on top of the boulder where Linde was drinking from his water bottle.
“It’s not from the same wound. These are finger marks.” He said, pointing to the lip of the rock ahead of them. “I’m betting his hands were scratched up.” He said. “It’s dry but these small amounts would dry fast.” He said. “Alright, come on.” They clambered up more rocks and boulders, only to stop.
“Hold on, Travis got caught up.” Linde said, and Brendon nodded, walking across the top of the rock. He stopped at the edge, looking out over an area of woods, only to gasp when he looked down. William was laying at the bottom, curled up on his side.
“LINDE! TRAVIS HE’S DOWN HERE!” Brendon shouted, then looked down over the edge, getting to his knees. “WILLIAM?!” He cried, but William didn’t move.
Travis suddenly appeared at his side. “Bill?!” he shouted, only to look afraid when he didn’t respond. “I’m coming, baby!” he cried, then looked as Linde came over.
Linde looked around. “It’s only about eight feet, we can jump down.” He said, and Brendon shot him a look.
“Maybe you can.” He said, and Linde just smiled at him.
“You wait here.” He said, and then turned, only to see Travis already landing at the bottom.
Travis looked up. “Run and jump so you don’t land on him.” He said. Linde nodded and tossed his pack down before backing up to jump.
Travis was already kneeling beside William. “Baby?” he said, pushing William’s hair from his face. He felt of his skin and cringed at how cold it was. “Bilvy?” he asked, taking his hand. “Linde, he’s cold.” He said, and Linde paled.
