Blaine looks at him in ways he’s only wished for before now.
From the very beginning, Blaine’s looks communicate the trust, protection and support of someone who knows exactly what Kurt is going through. No one (not Mercedes or even his father) has ever looked at him so tenderly or empathetically. His heart pounds whenever they share a glance. Kurt cherishes these moments of silent communion.
Kurt knows the look in Blaine’s eyes during his impromptu performance of Teenage Dream is mostly for show (he’s a performer too, after all), but for a brief moment, he allows himself to think about how wonderful it would be if Blaine were actually singing this song to him. Kurt is immediately smitten, which is typical for him. But he genuinely values the deep connection he seems to already have with Blaine, so he isn’t about to mess up this relationship like he has the others.
After confronting Karofsky on the steps of McKinley, Blaine looks at Kurt with sadness and pity. Perhaps not pity so much, but in his defeated state it feels a little like it. But more than that, it feels like Blaine wishes there is something he could do to change Kurt’s situation. Kurt knows he’s doing all he can by simply being there.
When Kurt transfers to Dalton and auditions for a solo, Blaine’s eyes are wide and encouraging, making it obvious that he’s proud of how talented Kurt is, even if he’s a little overly-dramatic for this particular crowd. When he doesn’t get the solo, Blaine’s look is apologetic. Though he doesn’t say it, Kurt hopes that look means that he wishes the other Warblers could see what Blaine sees in Kurt.
With Blaine, Kurt is content to continue exchanging flirtatious looks. Though they make him giddy, he doesn’t think they mean anything to Blaine, until one day, when he sees something different in Blaine’s honey-colored eyes. While he can barely believe it, he knows he’s not crazy. So far he’s been able to trust those eyes. Behind the unconditional support and camaraderie, Kurt starts to see looks that burn with passion; his mind seemingly overtaken by some fierce, animalistic desire. He catches Blaine’s eyes roaming Kurt’s body, even though he is fully-clothed. He does his best to exchange the same looks with Blaine, hoping he’ll get the hint and see that Kurt feels the same way. He waits day after day for something to become of these new looks, but Blaine - always the gentleman - simply doesn’t make the first move.
Even though he knows Blaine wants more than some giggle-filled, innocent relationship, Kurt doesn’t want to rush things. This is his first shot at something real, so he starts at the beginning and does the easiest and safest thing he can think to do. After seventh period, on their way back to the dorm, he brushes his open palm against Blaine’s and when the hand under his own responds favorably, he laces their fingers together.
Blaine touches Kurt like no one’s ever touched him before.
From the very beginning, the subtle ways Blaine touches him assure Kurt that he’s not scared of him and that he fully supports the person he chooses to be. Within moments of their first meeting, Blaine grabs his hand, like an excited child, eager to introduce Kurt to his world. Perhaps it should have been an obvious sign that there has always been the potential for something more than friendship between them, but Kurt is rarely observant when it actually matters.
Though oblivious to any potential romantic meaning, the worth is not lost on Kurt. The gentleness of his touch runs in sharp contrast to the harshness of being slammed into lockers and thrown into dumpsters for years. Until now, nearly anyone who’s touched Kurt has done so with intent to hurt him. Kurt knows this will never be the case with Blaine.
Their hands brush again briefly when Blaine takes Kurt’s phone from his hand to enter his number. “Call me anytime,” he adds softly, slipping it back into Kurt’s slightly open palm.
They high-five at Breadstix. For the rest of the night, Kurt keeps his hands very carefully folded in his lap. Since Blaine seems so comfortable with him, the temptation for touch is almost too much, but he resolves to keep himself in check. He’s not going to ruin a good friendship by being foolish.
When he fears Pavarotti is sick, Blaine lets his hand linger on Kurt’s knee. It’s not just the words he says that reassure Kurt, but also the thoughtfulness of the touch. He knows he’s being silly and overreacting about the bird, but he’s been at Dalton all of like three minutes and he’s already having a hell of a time. The hand on his knee is evidence that Blaine understands how hard this new beginning is for him. It’s also a reminder that he is not alone.
After a rousing rendition of Baby Its Cold Outside, they land side by side on the couch in the Dalton common room. Their shoulders overlap. They are closer than they’ve ever been before. The sexual tension has transitioned from that look in Blaine’s eyes to a physical presence. It feels so good to be together like this; so right. But, before anything can happen, Blaine is up like a shot being the damned gentleman that he’s always been.
At some point, Kurt realizes, he’s not crazy and he’s (hopefully) not going to screw this up, but he’s going to have to make the first move. And so it is, that after seventh period, on their way back to the dorm, he brushes his open palm against Blaine’s and when the hand under his own responds favorably, he laces their fingers together.
Kurt’s never really held hands with anyone besides Mercedes (Kurt doesn’t count the awkward hallway run with Blaine as holding hands - as it wasn’t hand holding with any intent besides direction). But here he is now, holding hands with Blaine - in front of everyone - as they walk down the hallway. Normally everything in Kurt’s brain would be screaming in confusion because Blaine isn’t recoiling out of fear or disgust. But this is Blaine, the boy who willing brought him into his world, the boy whose timid fingers had offered to be there for him anytime and the boy who never stopped reminding him he is not alone.
Though they’re given plenty of looks by fellow students, no words are spoken until they arrive at Kurt’s room and the door is properly shut. Almost immediately, Blaine’s hand returns to the where it had been only moments before.
He cups Kurt’s face in his hand. No one has ever touched Kurt this way before, and it’s just all so new and wonderful. He turns his face toward Blaine’s hand, allowing more pressure and contact. He struggles to keep his wobbly knees upright and be present in the moment, rather than thinking about all the newness.
“Finally,” Blaine chuckles, good-naturedly. “I don’t know how much more obvious I could have been.”
“So, you want this?” Kurt asks, squeezing Blaine’s hand, referentially.
“More than anything,” Blaine answers. Kurt can’t help the wide smile that slides across his lips. “You had to have known. I wasn’t exactly subtle.”
“Tell me.”
“You’re just this amazing, beautiful, talented person.” He strokes his thumb across Kurt’s cheek. “I’ve never met anyone who I felt so comfortable with, so quickly. I’ve never fallen so hard or so fast before.” He drops Kurt’s hand in favor of his waist and pulls him in tightly until their lips are just inches apart. Kurt closes his eyes for a moment, inhaling deeply. “You’re like something straight out of a daydream, but right here in front of me. So incredibly perfect.”
“Please,” Kurt begs. He made the first move; now it’s time for Blaine to do his part.
Without need for further clarification, Blaine closes the space between them presses his lips firmly to Kurt’s. The freedom is amazing. He grasps at Blaine’s lapels and then at his taut, blazer-covered arms.
He’s finally allowed to look and touch and feel all the things he’s wanted for so long.
Blaine feels things for Kurt that no one else has ever felt for him before.
From the very beginning, Kurt has felt these feelings, but at the time he didn’t know Blaine was feeling them too. But now, as he’s standing here kissing him, it’s evident that Blaine feels things that are very real and powerful; things that are nearly overwhelming Kurt.
And all at once, Kurt realizes this is another new beginning, but this time it’s not just for him - it’s for them.
