Notes: For solarflar3. The prompts were: red, circle, oxygen. Hope you like it!

He feels the Bad Wolf bearing down on them, and though he doesn’t know all it means, one thing he does know is that there will be change. It could be that the three of them will be separated; it could be that one or all of them will die; it could be that he’ll regenerate. He doesn’t know.

So he considers the possibilities. He can stay on this path with Jack and Rose and face whatever’s coming at them, or he can run. He can take Rose, and he can run, run, run from what’s coming.

For a moment, it all balances on a knife’s edge.

The tipping point comes at Kyoto. He watches Rose watching the women of the hanamachi, and he knows he can’t lose her. Every instinct he has as a Time Lord says he must follow the trail of breadcrumbs the Bad Wolf has laid out for him, find out what’s calling him across space and time.

Everything his hearts are telling him says he won’t survive her loss. He lost his planet; he murdered his people for the universe, a sacrifice to the Greater Good. And now the universe wants him to risk losing Rose.

No. He won’t do it. The universe owes him this much. It owes him one little human as recompense for his losses.

So he steers the ship away from the Bad Wolf as they re-board, pushing away from that Possibility into another. Instead, he takes them to a world with soft, springy red moss under a tangerine sky and tells them about Gallifrey. He sits with his friends, feels their warmth--and, as he looks into Rose’s eyes, knows that she wants him as much as he wants her.

Jack knows. His sexual instincts, honed to a fine edge, key him into the changing dynamic. He leaves the Doctor and Rose alone, tells them not to wait up for him as he withdraws into the bustling metropolis beyond the quiet heath.

It’s there on the red moss under the tangerine sky, with the scent of currants and honey on the air, that the Doctor makes love to Rose for the first time. Afterward, they lie together, him spooned up against her back as she dozes, his hand spread over her womb. He feels the life pulsing there, the latent possibility of her bearing children, and he wishes they could be his.

Jack takes his leave of them soon after. He says goodbye with hugs and kisses and graphic suggestions, thanking them for saving him before he walks away in search of his past. Rose cries a little.

Her tears are scarcely dry before the Doctor sends the TARDIS into the deep past, to a world where intelligent life won’t develop for eons still. There will be no possible interruptions as he leads Rose to his bedroom.

There, he learns her body, every secret it holds. He learns to read her response to him--the changes in her breathing and heart rate during arousal, the peaks and troughs of her physical and mental energy--and uses his knowledge to bring her to ecstasy. He makes her scream and sob with pleasure beyond anything she’s ever felt. He wants her to crave his touch, and his alone.

It works both ways. He finds himself becoming addicted to her. The glow and flush of her skin in passion, the soft feeling of her body against his, the taste and scent of her are all like drugs. No, like oxygen; he feels he can no longer survive without them. She takes him as surely as he’s taken her. Deep in the planet’s night, he traces his fingers over her golden skin as she presses him onto his back and takes him into her body, staking her claim that he will be hers alone.

Then they run again. He feels that Earth is the epicenter of the Wolf that stalks them, so he takes her farther and farther away from the planet of her birth, an ever-widening series of circles from the far side of her own galaxy to galaxies in the Milky Way’s cluster to exotic galaxies unseen by any humans of any time. They stop only long enough to make love.

Even so, he doesn’t feel safe. On one world, a seemingly random rock formation takes the shape of a wolf. On another, an old seer tells them a beast shadows them. On yet another, a warrior haka sounds suspiciously like “Bad Wolf.”

“What is it?” Rose asks as they lie in bed, recovering from an especially vigorous round of lovemaking.

“I don’t know,” he answers as honestly as he can. “I feel it coming. Whatever it is, it means things must change. I fear it means separation.”

She rolls over, leaning over him, her breasts brushing his chest and her hair hanging in curtains on either side of his face. “Let it try and pull us apart. I’m not leaving you, not ever.”

He smiles, caressing her face. “I don’t know that I can hold it off forever. Even if we can run from it for years, it might mean not seeing Earth for the duration. You’ll be separated from everything you know.”

“Everyone leaves the home where they grew up.” She traces her fingers over his collarbone. “You’re my home now. This is where I belong. With you.”

She kisses him, and that’s the end of the conversation.

***

They walk together on a world of heartbreaking beauty. Lavender shrubs grow out of deep blue grass under a silver sky. Shimmering gliders, nearly invisible to the human eye, wheel through the sky. The Doctor and Rose walk through a peaceful village of ivy-covered stone, listening to the music of the Singing Market.

At the edge of town, they stop. There, on the wall protecting the village, is a lichen formation that faintly, but distinctly, spells out “Bad Wolf” in English.

The Doctor takes Rose’s hand and looks down at her. “Run?”

She smiles. “Run!”

And they do.

They run, one step ahead of the Bad Wolf. The Doctor wonders if they can ever truly outrun it and rather suspects it will have its prey in the end. One day, their story will end. One day, he’ll lose her. One day, the Bad Wolf will catch them. But until that day . . .

They’ll run.
