We went to see Transformers tonight. The movie I've been waiting nigh on a year for.
I don't get it. I just don't get it. What's with all the hate? Maybe it's because I went into this as someone who was accepting of the fact that it wasn't going to be anything like the Transformers of old. Maybe it's because I grew up playing with My Little Ponies more than Robots In Disguise. Whatever the case, I thought it was a spectacularly done, amazingly fun, very endearing and heroic movie.
That said, I'm going to cut the rest because I know there are probably a few people who don't want to read spoilers and whatnot.
I'm going to try to go in chronological order according to how it happened in the movie.
The intro--I was expecting something different, as I'd read somewhere that the beginning was Optimus describing the origin of the Autobots and Cybertron and how things came to be how they were while showing flashbacks of said things happening. It wasn't, but I didn't really care. Why? Because in the words of a reviewer on AICN: It was Optimus Fucking Prime telling me how shit was.
Blackout--Hooooly jeebus. How hardcore can a helicopter be? Plenty hardcore, hardcore enough to pretty much decimate an entire military base solo. And that transformation sequence, what an introduction. Amazing. Bonus points for making me think of my brother because he's the kind of helicopter my brother worked on in the Air Force.
Spike and Bumblebee meet up: I really liked the comedy aspect of it. I thought that Bumblebee communicating through his radio was a nice touch, and pretty creative too. It was also hilarious to see Bumblebee following Spike down the sidewalk. The only real gripe I had with this whole part was Bumblebee having a freaking Autobatsignal. But hey, such is life. You win some, you lose some.
Scorponok--Feh. 'Tevs. The action sequence was nicely timed. That's about all I have to say about that.
I want to blow Frenzy up with psychic mind beams. Good lord.
Spike meets the Autobots--Ohhhhh my goodness. Wow. Just, wow. Seeing Ironhide and Jazz in their protoforms was awesome. Jazz was classic. I don't know how I feel about them learning to speak on teh internets. I was waiting for someone to say OMG. I would have probably walked out of the theatre. The entire sequence with the Autobots at Spike's house, his parents, Mikaela...just pure hilarity to me. I about died laughing, I really did. I'll admit that some of the Autobot dialog was lame. I never, EVER want to hear Optimus Prime utter the words, 'My bad' again. Other than that, gravy.
I'm still debating internally as to whether or not I want to hug John Turturro, or punch him in the face. I'll let you all know how that turns out.
The scene when S7 subdues and captures Bumblebee made me cry. Heartwrenching. I do feel that Travis made a good point about the following scene, and the Autobots not unquestioningly obeying Optimus like they should have, but there is also a lot to be said about free will and not blindly following a leader just because he's the leader.
Anthony Anderson was funny but I could have done without his character in its entirety.
I would really like to know why the Allspark mass shifts. But it was still a very cool thing to see.
The final fight--balls to the wall amazing. That's the only way I can describe it. It was kind of sad to see so many hardcore Decepticons go out rather easily, but that's not a huge issue for me. The scene where Jazz dies was a bit quick for me, and the scene where Bumblebee loses his legs was a gut check. But all in all, it was wonderful.
The final scene--I thought it was well written and had really nice cinematography. Left it open for sequels, which we know are coming, so that's good.
All in all, I loved the movie. I'd say it's easily in my top 5 movies ever. So yeah. I guess that's all I wanted to say.
Oh, and Tristan loved it too. Even if the poor guy fell asleep for the fight. Haha.
'Night.
