Another Day
Isaac sighed as he shifted the groceries from one hand to the other to make getting the door unlocked to his apartment. It was a far cry from the loft the had back in New York but he couldn’t complain. He and his guest have been in the two bedroom apartment for five months now. A tiny voice in his head told him in was time to make preparations for another move. It would only be a matter of time before something came to ruin the somewhat peaceful life they managed to keep up. The artist shook his head, that was a conversation with the girl at another time. Now he just needed to get inside and make sure she was okay while he was gone.
Isaac pushed open the door and stepped through the threshold, the apartment too quiet. The television wasn’t on, like most occasions.
“Claire?” the grungy haired man called, worry gripping at every organ in his body, “Claire this isn’t funny.”
There was shuffling coming from one of the bedrooms in the apartment. Isaac dropped the grocery bags and darted to bedrooms, after retrieving a knife from the kitchen. Taking a breath to prepare himself, the artist swung open the door with the knife held out in front of him.
“Happy Birthday!”
He blinked in surprise as a rather large cake was held out to him, a grinning blonde at the end of the extended arms.
“What?” the man took a step back, the knife wielding hand falling to his side.
“Oh good you brought a knife!” Claire continued to smile as she repeated, “Happy Birthday.”
Again the man blinked, “How did you know?”
Claire shrugged, “Simone told me.” The little frown that appeared, but disappeared just as quickly, on her lips didn’t go unnoticed. It had become a common thing whenever the blonde talked about his ex-girlfriend.
A small smile came to Isaac’s lips. Claire happily returned it, setting the cake down on the dresser and motioning him over, “Come on. You need to make a wish.”
He laughed, “I think we should take it to the kitchen. I don’t thing it would do any good to burn down my bedroom.”
Claire’s grin grew, “Well you could always sleep in my room.” She winked, laughing at the way his eyes widen and his mouth opened and fell as he tried to speak. She left the room with the cake, laughing all the way. Isaac took a breath and shook his head as he ran a hand through his hair, a smirk playing on his lips. It was never a dull day with that girl.
End.
