Baby Trails

Even though Chad had reassured her countless of times over the course of the weekend. Things were going to change too much after they revealed the news to their friends. She didn't know if it would be for the better or for the worst. While she really just wanted to pass on having to tell everyone, Sharpay knew it needed to be done.

"Shar," Ryan's voice broke through her thoughts as he gently reached out for her shoulder, "are you all right?"

She cleared her head and gave her twin the perfect smile, "Of course, I am Ryan!" The blue eyed blonde stared at her disbelievingly and she brushed off his hand to get a good look at him. "Hmm...You’re hat doesn't exactly go with your outfit Ry. Go get a better one."

Ryan frowned, "I like this one."

She scoffed, waving him in the direction of the stairs, "Change the hat, Ryan."

He rolled his eyes but did as she asked, retreating to the stairs. Sharpay released a sigh of relief; she hated lying to Ryan of all people and the longer he was in her presence Sharpay just wanted to let everything slip. She wasn't ready for that.

Soothing down the front of her skirt Sharpay waited, nearly jumping from her chair as a car honked from outside. She smiled, grabbing her bag as she headed for the door.

"Ryan, Chad's here. I'll see you at school! Don't forget to change that ugly hat."

Aside from their usual morning greeting of a kiss and hello’s, the ride to east high was silent. The moment the school came into view, Sharpay felt butterflies in her stomach for the first time in years. Chad parked the car and Sharpay turned to face him.

"Do we have to do this?" She asked, showing a side anyone ever saw.

His lips curled slightly, "We have to face the music sooner or later."

Her arms crossed as she leaned back against the seat and pouted, "I would rather it be later."

Chad chuckled, leaning towards her and pulling her in for a brief kiss. Some of the tension that had been building within her vanished with his kiss. His hand over the nonexistent bump that would eventually form only reassured her that he wouldn't abandon her.

She pushed him away playfully, wiping her mouth at the horrified expression that crossed his face. "Since when have you become the voice of reason Chad Michael Danforth?"

The blonde left the car before he could try and reply. Shaking his head Chad followed, calling after her, "don’t forget at lunchtime we spill!" Sharpay a short wave signifying she had heard before disappearing within the school.

The morning classes only seemed to drag on and on for Chad. If Troy came up to him one more time before lunch to ask about what Chad had to tell everyone, he didn't know what he was going to do. But punching his best friend in annoyance was sounding really good about now.

"So..." Troy began promptly earning a glare for his efforts. He smiled sheepishly, raising his hands up in defensive as they made their way down the hall and towards the cafeteria. "Okay, okay. Sorry I'll wait, but really what can be so important that you can't even tell me?"

Chad sighed, "Not that I don't want to tell you but it would just be better if we told everyone."

Troy nodded, "So this is about Sharpay too?" Chad nodded. "About how she's..." he trailed off and making a few gestures to make his point.

"How'd you..." He paused a moment and shook his head, "Gabriella." Troy nodded. "I really wanted to tell you but,"

Troy shrugged, "I get it." He laughed slightly; "I guess its payback for never telling you about the musical back in sophomore year."

"There you are!" Sharpay's voice called, the blonde making her way over to the pair with Gabriella not far behind. "You took forever. Hi Troy. Let's go." She stated rapidly, promptly grabbing a hold of Chad's wrist and dragging him into the cafeteria.

The others, minus Jason, were already seated at the usual table when Chad, Sharpay, Gabriella & Troy came to sit. Ryan was the first to look up, worry etched on his features as he watched his unusually nervous sister.

"So what's the important news, we had to wait for?" Zeke asked.

"Maybe we should wait for Jason." Gabriella offered.

Chad glanced down at his girlfriend, her bottom lip drawn between her teeth. He wrapped his arm around her shoulders to draw her closer. "Shar."

"I'm pregnant." She stated softly, thankful for the noise in the cafeteria.

The others froze, staring at the two as though they had both grown another head. Ryan was the first to return to his senses. His expression darkened as he turned to Chad, who smiled sheepishly.

"You...you..."

"Ry, calm down." Sharpay mumbled, glaring at him in turn. His eyes snapped towards her and she scrunched up her nose in distaste, "Ew, I thought I told you to change that hat?"

Ryan chuckled hollowly, "You drop this news on me, sis, and you're worried about my hat."

She shrugged.

"How far along?" Kelsi asked softly."

"I don't know." She answered, "I..." Chad squeezed her hand, "We still have to set up an appointment."

They fell silent once more still reeling from the sudden news.

"What did I miss?" Jason asked, appearing beside Kelsi a stacked tray in his hands. The petite pianist leaned over to whisper in his ear. The jocks' eyes widened as he stayed at the pair. A huge smile crossing his lips.

"Way to go Chad knocking up the ice queen."

The cafeteria fell silent after Jason's outburst. Every head turned towards the table and the whispering began. Jason sank in his seat under the withering glares from Sharpay, Chad and Ryan. The blonde stood to her feet hastily, tears shining in her eyes.

"Thank you Jason. Thank you." She hissed before making a hasty exit from the room.

Chad sighed, glaring at his friend. "Way to go man." He stood instantly following the girl.

He managed to catch her in the hallway before she disappeared into the girls' bathroom. Chad wrapped his arms tightly around the silently crying blonde, his chin coming down to rest in her hair.

"What's with girls' and going to the bathroom after something tragic happens?" He asked, trying to make light of the situation.

Sharpay sniffled; "it's all about the comfort."

His nose scrunched up in disgust, "What's so comforting about a bathroom?"

She tried to laugh pass the tears, "Just shut up Chad and do what you came here to do."

He smiled just holding her in his arms as he let her cry. He wasn't the best at comforting but he'd always let her use him as a human tissue. Chad loved her more than he could say and while he never told her directly, one day he knows he will.
