Masquerade Ball - Gathering

Oct 31, 2014 05:54

The Masquerade Ball was different, this was a party for adults and Buffy had wanted it to be a little bit like the Ball in Labyrinth because seriously who didn’t think that David Bowie’s Jareth was the sexiest ever? So the entry for the adult party was more glamorous (at least Buffy hoped) and the interior continued that theme. There was an area ( Read more... )

Cat loved masquerade balls so when she saw the advertisement for this one, she found the perfect dress. It was blue with a matching mask. Her mouth opened slightly when she saw the decorations inside. It reminded her somewhat of the dance she'd had with Vincent in New York and Cat wondered if time truly was on hold there and if it wasn't, was he all right?

Shaking off the questions she would never have answers to, she moved toward the dance floor to watch the festivities.

I'm not usually a fan of masquerades, but a ball means dancing and I don't get to do a lot of it here. So I dug through the props room at the opera and came up with a cape and a mask to go with my tux. Phantom of the Opera! Not very original, but it should do.

And here I am, looking for someone to dance with when I spot this sparkling blue dress. And if I'm not totally mistaken I know the figure in it.

"Dare to dance with the Phantom?" And no, that's not a slip of the tongue. Halloween is supposed to be spooky, so dare it is.

"As if I would ever turn down an offer like that." Catherine smiled beneath her mask and motioned toward the dance floor. She was pleased to see Clayton at the ball.

I offer her my arm. "That's a very beautiful dress, but nothing else would do for a beautiful woman."

"Thank you, you look quite dashing yourself." Catherine was more at home with jeans and a shirt, but she did love to dress up formally when the occasion called for it.

Her hand slid easily into the crook of his arm.

I lead her to the dance floor. "That's what I aimed for. Glad it worked," I joke. "I usually don't attend masquerade balls, but here I've learned to go with what entertainment is on offer."

"I've only been to a few masquerade balls and they usually were charity events that my mom or dad wanted us to go to." She smiled at the memories, placing her hand on his shoulder and in his free hand when they reached the dancing area.

"Charity events must be different in New York. I've been to several myself, but I believe only one was a masquerade ball."

I place my hand a little lower than I would with Mother as we start dancing. And I'd better make sure I don't step on her long dress.

"How old were you when you went? If it was with your parents."

"Well to be honest, my father was a lawyer and my mother was a scientist. There was a yearly fundraiser that was a masquerade. The first one I went to, I was seventeen." She smiled at Clayton, "I felt like an adult for the first time. I wasn't of course, but it was like no longer having to sit at the kid table for holidays."

"I'm sure you were the pride of your parents. My one masquerade ball I attended during my time at Harvard. A professor talked me into joining him for it as he thought I should meet some people who'd be there. I felt quite out of place at first but in the end I had some interesting conversations." As in I met someone who got me into the National Cryptographic School after graduation.

Catherine nodded, "it's funny how once adults start treating you as a peer, if only by not talking down to you, that you start to get confidence and fell less like the ugly duckling and more like the swan."

I have to grin at her words. "That's a fairly feminine way of putting it. But I must agree with what you mean."

Cat laughed, "okay, fair point. Next time I'll go with a less feminine metaphor."

"No need for that, feminine fits you well." Especially in a dress like this.

The song comes to an end, making me take a half-step back to look at her. "Another dance or maybe something to drink?"

"A drink would be nice, with another dance later?" Catherine suggested, not moving from her dance position with Clayton.

"Absolutely, if you still have an opening on your dance card I can claim." I grin, then place a hand in the small of her back to guide her off the dance floor towards the bar.
