Summer reading [OTA]

There had been quite a run of hot sunny days, but today there was also a marvelous breeze that made everything feel clean and fresh. Lana opened all the doors and windows of the bookstore to let the breeze bring in fresh air and chase out all the stuffiness ( Read more... )

...And a perfect day for an Asgardian to visit a friend. Loki spotted the open doors and windows to the book shop and decided to (finally) take Lana up on her offer. He headed inside and paused a moment to let his eyes adjust to the dark(er) interior.

"Loki!" Lana said with a smile. "How nice to see you again!"

"Lana," Loki greeted her in return with his own smile. "I must ask your indulgence and forgiveness for not attending upon you sooner." He bowed slightly to her, with his hand over his heart. While there was still a smile on his face, there might have also been a tinge of regret.

"I found myself in conflict with another shortly after arriving and did not wish to draw his attention towards you."

"Oh no!" Her face showed her concern. "I'm sorry you had trouble with someone. But I can understand - and certainly appreciate - your not wanting to bring trouble here."

Lana came around to the front of the counter. "I hope things have settled down now?"

Loki reached for Lana's hand, intending to bring it up to kiss the back of her fingers, should she allow it.

"Of course it has. I would never endanger you."

She blushed, but let him kiss her hand. He was always so charming. "Well... thank you," she said, obviously a bit flustered. "I was mostly concerned for you, though. It's hard enough to end up here far away from home without having someone give you trouble."

"The only troubling Trickster gave me was forcing me to keep my distance from you, lovely Lana." Loki said softly.

"I hope you have been well..."

She laughed as she blushed again. "I have, but tell me, who is this Trickster? I thought that was your job."

"Some imposter. He impersonated me for five hundred years in his home-world and thought that gave him the ability to best me here." Loki's smile is serene. "But enough about him."

He looked around the room for her artwork. "Let's get back to talking about you," he smiled.

"Five hundred - wow," Lana shook her head. "Well, I guess I'm glad you set him straight. But me? What do you want to know about me?"

"You mentioned you had paintings here. I would like to see them, if you don't mind..."

He really wanted to see her paintings? Lana was touched, but also felt more than a little shy. Yes, she had a few of them up in the store - the one she'd done of little David, a couple of the streets of Hauruvatat, another of the woods - but few people had any idea that she was the one who had painted them.

She gestured toward the walls. "You're free to check them out. They're a few of my favorites, some that I feel came out best, you know? Let me know what you think. Unless you hate them, then you can feel free to just nod and raise your eyebrows or something."

Loki looked them over, pausing long before the street paintings and the forest.

He nodded and pointed to the one of David. "This is good," he commented, then moved to one of the two of the streets of the village. "But I think you were more practiced when you did this one..." He looked back to her. "Am I right?"

Lana nodded. "You are. That one is actually my latest. At least of what I have here. I've been thinking maybe I should do one of the front of the bookstore, use it on the bags and brochures or whatever. But I'm afraid that just seems terribly vain."

"You should," Loki said. "Your works fire the soul and brings light to the imagination. You--"

A book caught his eye. "You have got to be joking," he said in an amused tone as he picked up the book.

"Flatterer," Lana said with yet another blush.

And then she laughed when she saw the book. "There are actually several books that are supposedly about you. Is that your shelf? The village always has a shelf appear for anyone who comes in. It has books they think the person would like or that would be good for them - or perhaps that would amuse or annoy them."
