OTA-timed to Friday evening

Honestly, sometimes a parent needed to read books that didn't have pictures.

Normally, Sonya spent child free afternoons training, but the library had a sort of quiet that she appreciated more than just the bookstore. This was more selective and the shelves containing books that weren't just for sales numbers. Just because she wasn't an active student in the magic school anymore didn't mean she didn't keep up with the reading list-it just meant her time studying was shorter.

She had the list with her when she was looking through the titles, skimming over them to find what she was looking for. It required a double take when the spine of one book held a symbol she never thought she'd see again. The Mortal Kombat dragon.

Her other books were soon forgotten as she pulled the other book from the shelf, the contents revealing it to be a sort of tomb of the past kombat lists and fighters of the tournaments, numbers at the top of the page revealing the years each tournament was held. Each name on the list had a line through it-most were red, but on occasion there was a black line. It didn't take long for her to know what they meant, and the fact that there were so many red made her need to sit down. She was part of this, part of the list of names from centuries ago-and she wasn't sure how she felt about that.

Sitting at one of the tables, she flipped to the last few pages of the book: 1992, the date of the tenth and final tournament, and the start of her life as a Defender. Sure enough, there was a black line through her name and Johnny's..Liu Kang being the victor. Too bad it didn't stop there.

She flipped through the leaves, skimming backwards: 1946, the ninth tournament..no Earthrealm victors of course. It was the last time Outworld won the tournament. She'd been warned of that when learning of the tournament and what was at stake. One of the names caught her attention. Eric Malecki..her mother's father. It had to be him-it even listed her mother's home town and state. Everyone knew her grandfather died after the war, that he left for 'something' and never came back. The red line across his name spoke of it. She quickly flipped the pages back to the previous tournament lists...again, the family name Malecki, this time it was a great uncle. It could've been a different person, but she didn't believe in those coincidences. Both names had a red line through them.

The next hour or so found her still at the library, the table now covered with records of lists, names and dates and things she had no idea how the library was able to produce but she was thankful it did. It was with them that she was able to find more family members, more names in the tournament lists of relatives that were killed in the tournament-who had their souls taken by Shang Tsung.

It was evening now, Margaret and Tyr might wonder where she was, but she couldn't bring herself to pull away from the table. These were her family..as far as she could tell, the book traced tournaments all the way to the 15th century-and she was able to trace her family all the way back to the 17th from the tournament lists. How many of them died before she broke the cycle? How many families torn because of that damned sorcerer.

Sonya pushed herself away from the table, rubbing at the bridge of her nose. Fucking Outworld.

ooc: Find her at one of the library tables. She has all sorts of records and census lists, as well as a heavy book of what look like tournament brackets and names. A distraction would be welcome..or a reminder that it might be time to head home.
