Killer Robots, Take 4 (ota)

So far Peter's experiments with visual tracking systems had not been very successful. The first difficulty was to get a program from Eli at Lemon Drop Labs that would simulate Terminators without the machine actually becoming sentient and trying to kill the entire village - that had been a hard one. Without the robot being sentient, though, Peter ( Read more... )

Olivia had been on her way to the Fringe lab when she spotted Peter stepping out into the parking lot. Her brow knit wondering what he was doing when she saw the small robot. Curiosity brought her closer and then she laughed when he was hit with the NERF balls.

"Didn't work huh?"

"Nope." He smiled to Olivia when he saw her, though, then glanced down at the expended NERF 'bullets'. "Just got assassinated by a robot."

"Ah." Olivia said with humor still showing. "And you were the noble sacrifice without firing back?"

He nodded solemnly. "Someone's got to be the bigger person between the two of us, and the robot has a lot of ego."

"Ah, Napoleon complex." Olivia nodded just as solemnly. "That can be a real problem to overcome."

"Especially when it's programmed in." He smiled and broke character.

"How's it going, Olivia?"

"That sounds like they'll have a long session with their robotic therapist." Olivia grinned then answered, "I'm doing okay." All things considered. "What brought on your experiment?"

He glanced to the toy robot. "You ever watch the movie Terminator?" Peter had a few times. "I ran into a girl from that world and started talking about how the village might be a good place to find advantages."

Oddly, Olivia hadn't been a fan of Science Fiction, especially given what she did for a living now, but there were some movies of that genre that she did enjoy. Terminator was one of them.

"I have watched it." She nodded then her brow furrowed, "and find advantages how?"

"All kinds. Different ways to fight or different guns." He shrugged, then glanced to the robot. "I was hoping to maybe find a way to screw with the visual matrix of a terminator. Kind of like a virus."

"Makes sense." Olivia said after a moment. "They're all machines so a virus would be the easiest and fastest way to disable them." A hint of a smile, which showed how far she'd come that she could sort of joke about it. "A lot faster than using your mind."

He looked at her, then smiled back. He thought Olivia, with her propensity to achieve whatever she put her mind to, would probably find it easier if she train enough, but he didn't say that.

"I just hope things like that can actually cross over. Though I did hear people have been able to go to other people's worlds, so maybe."

Olivia looked down at the small robot for a moment and then nodded. "It's definitely possible to go to other worlds, especially if this really is a nexus. So, I think at least the knowledge and the technology can cross."

"Then hopefully I can actually figure this out at some point to be helpful to this girl." He crouched and picked up the robot. "It's harder than it looks." Which was true, but he said it a bit playfully.

"With the way you think outside the box, I have no doubts that you'll find a way to make it work. Especially because it's harder than it looks." Olivia smiled at him. "You take after Walter in that way."

"Now I know you meant that as a compliment." He smiled as he closed the distance between them a little. "But hopefully I never inherit Walter's propensity for walking around in a housecoat all times of the day or his need for experimental drugs."

Not that Peter never experimented before when he was younger, of course.
