We Make Our Own Fate (Arrival, OTA)

As he flew through the air, John could hear Kate's scolding in the back of his mind. His wife was never happy when he put himself on the front line. You're the leader, John. You can't go off and do every misson. They need you here, safe. John knew in some regards, Kate was right. What good was the leader of the Resistance if he were dead? On the other hand, John couldn't stomach the idea of ordering people to go on dangerous missions for him while he sat back in a relatively safe and secure location. If he was going to ask people to risk their lives, so was he.

John's back hit the cement wall and knocked the wind out of him with a grunt. The T-X had been reprogrammed for weeks now and this was the first real mission other than some reconnaissance and training. Things had been looking good, but whatever happened since they entered the facility... the T-X was no longer on their side. John could only think about how thankful he was he had pissed it off so that it wanted to hurt him before it killed him. There was going to be a lot of 'told you sos' when he got back to Home Base. If he got back.

He rolled onto his stomach and spit out blood that had pooled in his mouth. He could feel a broken rib or two and probably had a concussion. John scrambled to his feet and did not stop to see where the T-X was, but ran in the opposite direction. It was a good thing he had a policy of never giving metal access to weapons or else he knew he'd be riddled in bullet holes right now.

John was almost around a corner when he felt something hard hit him in the back and he went flying. The T-X has thrown an entire metal door at him. He felt a sharp pain register up his leg. Something was broken there. He fell flat on his stomach again, but this time he was half covered by a deformed door that had been ripped off of its hingess.

He was too disoriented at that very moment to realize he was no longer in a warehouse, but on a cobblestone street in the middle of a peaceful-looking community.
