Softball Game (OTA - gathering)

[Brought forward to today to avoid clashing with the body-swap event that has been moved to next weekend! Please pretend it had been planned for this weekend all along.]
A diamond-shaped playfield had been marked off in the park with chalk-dust and even some flat stones had been put in place as bases, though on closer inspection they looked more  ( Read more... )

Faith was there, her son who would be two in nearly a week was there too. She had gotten him a small glove. He wouldn't be able to play in the actual game of course, but before it started she was playing catch with him with a baseball (the softball was much to large for his small hands).

He had to use his entire body as he fought to toss the ball. It took a large arc in the air and then landed only a few feet away from where he was standing.

But she clapped all the same, a proud mommmy, going to get the ball, "That's it Ed! Next thing you know you'll be playing for the Red Sox!"

"Hey, hey, seems a new baseball star is here, too," Jim said with a smile as he walked over to Faith. He gave Ed a thumbs-up sign.

Ed laughed, glove covering his face. Faith smiled at Ed, then Jim, "Yeah, he really wanted to play with us too, but I said it wasn't a good idea. But figured we could practice his throw before we started."

Jim laughed at Ed hiding behind his glove. As they had never met, it seemed a natural reaction. But the lad seemed lively enough. "We'll need to found a little league for him." Not that they had an adult league.

"Yeah, that'd be good. Maybe we could put together one at the daycare." Faith smiled, her son then moved to try to toss the ball again and it rolled right up to Jim's feet.

"Bet he'd like that," Jim said in reply to Faith, before squatting down to pick up the ball that had nudged his foot.

"Sorry, partner, hadn't been paying attention there," he told the young boy and very gently threw the ball back to Ed. "There ya go."

He stood up again. "I learned to play from older boys on the streets." There had been no daycare for him and no little league.

He missed it and it bounced and rolled behind him, but he quickly gave it chase.

"Yeah... know how that goes. I played a little street ball back in Boston too." When the boys let her, but she'd not taken shit from people even as a child, so they usually did if they didn't want a baseball bat to the crotch.

"Probably more fun anyway, less pressure than on a team." He watched Ed for a moment. "So - who's going to watch over him if you've come to play?"

"My boyfriend, Dean was going to keep an eye on him." she offered, pointing him out in the crowd.

Jim looked where she was pointing. "Ah, good of him. So I can count you in for the game again, I know you're pretty good." He remembered that from the last match. "Care to play on my team?" He asked with a cheeky grin.

Faith laughed, smiling back, "Of course. I'd be happy to be your ringer." There was definitely nothing wrong with Faith's confidence, it would seem.

Jim liked Faith's confidence, much easier for him to deal with than with shy and insecure people.

"Great! Means I only need to round up another 7. Shouldn't be too hard, it's filling up nicely." He looked around, checking for other familiar faces. Surprisingly few players from the last game were there, but he spotted a couple of familiar faces he should be able to get to play on his team. "There's Maggie and over there is Eugene, who said he'd probably bring a friend who'd enjoy playing, too." He pointed them out to Faith. "That'd be another 3. Anyone you could recommend?"

Faith looked around thoughtfully, "Well, I know Riley over there." she pointed out the man in the crowd of people practicing, "He's probably pretty good. Farm boy athletic sort."

"Ah, same type as Maggie then. She runs the local farm. Been out there the other day - too much hard work for my likes. But yeah, probably keeps her fit." Jim grinned before he looked at Riley for a moment. "Maybe you can ask him if he'll join us?" That seemed the easiest way for him, if they both spoke to the people they knew.

"I can do that for sure." she agreed. Luckily her relationship with Riley wasn't as awkward as it used to be or that task might seem a little more daunting.

Jim nodded contentedly. "I wonder if anyone is actually organizing our rivaling team?" He looked around searchingly. "Otherwise it'll simply be us against the rest!"
