Jack was still a crack shot, but that was only because he made it a point to practice. Which was what found him at the shooting range this afternoon. Raising his pistol, he waited until the paper target slid all the way back to the range. Then he fired off the Webley .38 mark IV, all six bullets hitting their target ( Read more... )

Kate's eyebrow arched as she approached the man with the Webley, a smirk teasing her lips. "Yeah? Not bad with a paper target but how are you with one that moves and fires back?"

Jack just laughed, looking down at the ground a moment clearly amused at her words before setting the gun down to face her.

"Hopefully you don't have to find out." he winked, playfully, "Would be a shame to ruin a perfectly good body like yours."

Kate laughed, "nice incorporate a flirt and a threat. I like it." She walked over to him and held out her hand. "Name's Kate."

"Heh, it's the best kind of threat." he grinned at her and took her hand in a firm shake, "Captain Jack Harkness."

"Captain huh? I usually can spot Military." Kate leaned her hip against the gun counter with a smile. "You're like my friend Declan. He's not a head up your ass military either."

He snorted, "That's me, Captain Jack 'Head Not Up My Ass' Harkness."

Kate laughed. "Gonna tattoo that on your ass?"

"You know I was thinking of doing a butterfly there, but now that you mention it..." he tapped his chin in thought.

"You know there's a tattoo parlor not far from here. I can get my other employees to watch the place while I take you." Kate offered with an arched brow.

Jack laughed, "No, that's alright. But thank you for the offer, Kate." He gestured around them, "So do you own the firing range, then?"

"Manage anyway." Kate nodded, "it's close enough to what I do back home that I'm good with the village giving it to me." It was a hell of a lot better than running the *shudder* wedding planning store.

"What do you do back home then?"

Shoot people? That seemed a logical conclusion. But Jack had done the same, so he wasn't judging if that was the case.

Kate laughed, "Muscle for hire, to the highest bidder, now I'm muscle for hire for the Sanctuary Network. We are a safe harbor for Abnormals."

That last bit piqued his interest, and he gave her a more thorough eye, "What are abnormals? I'm guessing not aliens or you'd have just said aliens."

He wondered if they were anything like Torchwood. He hadn't heard of them before, but that could be a result of different dimensions.

"Abnormals are what they call themselves but they are natural mutations. Like my boss is Immortal, one of my good friends is a werewolf and we have a mermaid that likes when we swim in the nude with her. We went after this one, swear to God they were a humanoid blue monkey lizard looking."

Kate was ashamed to say that when she'd started out, she sold Abnormals on the Black Market. A lot of money could be had that way. Past life, past regret.

It sounded a lot like Torchwood. Except that they dealt with extra-terrestrial and temporal threats. Although threats from the Earth itself reared their heads frequently as well. But werewolves and mermaids sounded more alien to him.

Even the Immortal boss was familiar. Enough that he laughed under his breath.

"Sounds... oddly familiar to me. Ever hear of Torchwood, by chance?" Didn't hurt to ask.
