Funny you're the broken one but I'm the only one who needed saving [ota, tg Dyson]

Even though she had known it was coming, Jenna still hadn't been fully prepared for the moment Ric said goodbye.  After a promise to look for each other on The Other Side, he had left and Jenna had found herself alone once more.  After that she had retreated from everything and everyone as she tried to deal.  She just wasn't sure how well she was ( Read more... )

Elijah was looking. He'd been torn, knowing how upset Damon was--feeling it--but Damon had other people who loved him. He didn't need Elijah. Elijah's own sadness was just another piece added to a slowly growing pile. He'd bear it. He always did. He didn't have the luxury of breaking ( ... )

It didn't surprise her that he had come looking for her, she should have expected it, but it was still sweet that he had.

She had sensed Elijah seconds before he sat down and she watched him slide into the seat across from her without saying a word. She had a feeling he would just sit there silently all night if he figured she wanted that.

Maybe a part of her did but that felt wrong.

"I guess I was easy to find, huh?" She asked with a small smile as she started to pour herself another shot. "Can't really go far in a small magical village."

"You really can't," he agreed wryly. "And process of elimination. It didn't really feel like a getting lost in the woods kind of night."

Though he could have tracked her there, too.

Asking her how she was seemed almost foolish, and he had no comforting words he could offer, necessarily. "If I can save him...I don't even know if that is possible, but if so...I will do everything I can."

It was all he had, really.

"Don't make promises you can't keep, Elijah." She wasn't saying it to be cruel or because she didn't think he could do it but she also knew how quickly things could get out of control.

Mainly, she just sounded weary. "We both know it's an impossible situation."

"I did say 'if I can,'" he said, quietly. He wasn't promising to save him. Just to try, if the situation allowed for it.

As always, he was careful with his words, but weariness was something he understood all too well. "I've never been good at accepting impossibility."

He expected the world to bend to his will too often.

She managed a half smile before she tossed back her shot, letting the alcohol burn a harsh path down her throat and into her stomach but it still wasn't enough.

"I don't get it. How can so much bad stuff happen in one place?" She frowned, shaking her head as she poured another shot.

"Cursed ground." The words were out before he could really think about them, or stop them, but once they were, he had to think that maybe they were true.

"It certainly seems like it, doesn't it?" She sighed softly, looking up at him.

"Everything that's happened there...from the time my parents and their friends decided to establish a village in wolf territory..." He shook his head. "I have to wonder what mark that left there. Us. The massacre of the village, the wolves. The witches they burned there. The vampires entombed. The rituals over and over again..." He shook his head a little. "And yet, we keep calling it home. All of us."

"I had made it out once." She murmured softly, thinking about what her life had been like when she had left Mystic Falls. Then, almost instantly, she felt guilty as she looked down. "I don't regret coming back though. I just hate what's happening to everyone else."

"I hate that he's going back there to die." Her voice trembled for a second till she pushed it away, closing her eyes. "Then Elena and Jeremy won't have anyone left."

There was nothing he could promise there, nothing he could say that wouldn't be presumptuous and not helpful.

"I know," he said quietly. "So do I."

Whatever they'd been back home, Alaric had become his friend, here. He admired the man more than he'd ever been able to say, and he hated what his family had done--was going to do--to him. "They'll have each other. And Elena will have Caroline there with her, going forward. And Stefan and Damon." He shook his head a little, reached to touch her hand lightly. "It's not the same as blood, but...it can be very close. I've learned that here."

She knew he was trying and she appreciated it just like she appreciated what he was saying about Elena having her friends to help her through what was coming. She knew Jeremy would have Matt as well.

"I know, I know what you're saying and I know you're right." She sighed again before being totally honest. "It just doesn't make me feel better right now."

"I know." His smile was slightly crooked, more sad than anything else. "I don't think there's anything I could say to make you feel better now."

It was sort of a maddening thing, to be unable to fix anyone or anything, to not know what to do.

She curled her fingers around his own, giving them a gentle squeeze because she didn't want him to think she was being ungrateful.

"I'm not really sure there's anything that anyone can say right now that would work."

"I suppose some things there really aren't words for..." He allowed, squeezing back.

"No." She agreed with a shake of her head before looking at him curiously. "Did you find anything that helped you when Lexi left?"
