Monday Afternoon (OTA)

Alice was in the outside area of the shooting range. She had it set up so that there were targets high and low and would require moving and climbing and other such things to get to some of them. She had two kukri knives strapped to her back and two pistols sheathed on her thighs. She started a digital timer and began to move through the obstacle ( Read more... )

As she re-emerged to begin again, there was a dwarf standing on sturdy legs with his mouth agape.

She was very dextrous and very effective. Kili closed his mouth with a snap and nodded, shoulders thrown back to look noble.

Alice would have looked twice if she hadn't been in the village for over four years. She up-nodded to him, paused, then glanced to the obstacle course. "You want a try?" It wasn't just her space, after all, so she didn't want to monopolize it.

Erm.

Kili took a few steps closer to survey the scene. It would most definitely be a challenge and it could provide much needed testing of his bow skills.
"Perhaps after you do it again, Miss ...?"

"Alice." She answered him as she took him in a little more closely as he approached. He might have short legs, but Alice was a believer anyone could push themselves to succeed - that's what she did to herself.

"Sure." She held out the timer to him. This way it'd be more accurate. "Time me?"

"Kili, at your - "

But he didn't have a chance to finish, taking the device into his hands. "How, Miss Alice - " did this fantastical thing work?

Something in the way that he spoke reminded Alice of Faramir. Perhaps the way he was dressed as well.

She moved to show him. "This button starts the clock." It was digital, so the numbers moved without any hands. "This one here stops the timer."

Alice paused and looked at him. "It's kind of like the device you get when you got here, only with two buttons, so it's more simple."

Simple was good; Kili hadn't yet tried to send a message on the device Fili had shown him. He punched at the buttons watching the magical display change.

Right: he nodded. He was ready!

Alice sent him a slight smile, then turned to face the course.

"Go." The moment she spoke, she pushed off. She now knew some of the areas she needed to push harder at. The disadvantage of once having super-human abilities and losing most of them was you had to adapt. Thankfully not all her speed and strength had diminished.

When she was done, she moved back to where Kili was. "How'd I do?" She was a little winded, but was recovering quite quickly.

Oh, the pressure. Kili blinked and looked down at the small device in his stubby fingers. He turned it so that she could see it.

The numbers had somehow resembled 15.48 were he to be pressed to answer.

She looked at the number. "Not bad." It was an improvement, though Alice hoped at some point to get it down to ten.

"Feel like giving it a try?"

Would he live it down if he failed?

Though Kili couldn't help thinking it was good he'd brought his bow and arrows.

The corner of his mouth twitched and he nodded. Then he moved to where Miss Alice had been when she started running.

Alice wasn't one to judge - she had no right, after all. She stood back and held up the timer. A bow and arrow might slow him down a bit, but it was a weapon she could respect.

"Whenever you're ready."

A look of formidable concentrate settled itself on Kili's features and he started running, already pulling his bow from its holster on his back. An arrow too and he shot at the first target. The arrow pierced it and he moved on before drawing his sword from its holster, too.

It felt good to move again, like stretching muscles.

She watched and was impressed. He was agile for his size and it was obvious he was used to fighting. If he was from her world, he had a good chance of survival.

Hacking with his sword, firing arrows had Kili grinning and breathless as he came back to the start. He swayed on his feet, but he was pleased. How'd he do?!

She showed him the numbers. "15:55." Her lips pressed into a slight smile that was still impressed. "You move pretty fast."
