Catherine placed the flowers at her mother’s grave, her voice low. “Dad’s getting married in a week. He .. uh .. wants to start a fresh life.” Emotions bubbled up inside of her and she tried to force them back again. “He knew that you had secrets, and he tried to protect me from them.” Tears began to clog her throat but Catherine forced the words out past them.

“I have to believe that whatever you were doing, you thought it was the right thing. God, I want so badly to bury this, but you left this mess and now I have to do everything I can to make it right.” She paused as she tried to get her emotions under control again. The silence lengthened while Catherine struggled until she could speak again. “I love you, mom.” Her hand reached out to touch the top of the gravestone. “I love you.”

Catherine stood up, the cold seeped into her bones and her arms wrapped around her waist to protect herself from it. It was only after a few steps away from her mother’s grave that she noticed she wasn’t in the same graveyard anymore. Her head whipped back around to where she’d been and the moonlight highlighted Vanessa Chandler’s name on the smooth stone.

Her hand automatically reached for the gun at her hip, only it wasn’t there. She had left her service revolver at her apartment when she’d gone out to the cemetery. Catherine silently cursed but in the back of her mind there was a fear that maybe she was having a psychotic break. Post Traumatic Stress or something.

“Hello?” Catherine’s voice rang out but was met with silence. There were buildings nearby and that meant people. All she knew was that she wasn’t in New York any longer. Her cell was testament to that with no service. “Damn it.”

Cat began walking closer to town center to get some answers.
