When Alice walked into Rangeman, she noticed that Riley was re-dressing a wound on his lower arm. She surveyed him quietly with her eyes. He'd been fighting again and it was starting to get hard to tell who was winning. Instead of walking by him, she approached the front desk where he was currently sitting ( Read more... )

Buffy had been concerned about Riley. She was noticing the tell tale signs of what she'd done when she'd first come back to life. It had been a niggling suspicion at first but it was getting stronger now. She'd even followed him one night thinking that he was going to Fangtasia for some biting and she wasn't sure if she was relieved or not that he'd gone into the fight club.

She was determined to find out what was up but she didn't want to just come out and ask. Buffy knew from her own experience that he'd probably tighten up and go on the defensive so this called for sneaky.

Her hand knocked on the doorjamb into his office. "Hey, feel like buying a girlfriend a meal?"

Riley looked up at the noise and smiled when he saw Buffy. It was always a genuine smile when he looked at her - how could it not be? "Hey."

He turned in his chair and then got up. The only indication of fighting on his face was a healing bruise under is right eye. The rest of his injuries were lower. Bruises, mostly. "Sure. Have a type of meal in mind?"

"How about a romantic picnic?" Buffy waggled her eyebrows. "Stop at the cafe and get some sandwiches to go and head over to the lake?" She wanted some privacy for this conversation.

"Picnic it is, then." The idea of a romantic lunch with Buffy was appealing. He sent a quick message off to Alice he was going to lunch and then moved to meet Buffy with a smile. "You get the greatest ideas, you know?"

“Sometimes I come up with pretty good ones.” She smiled and slipped her hand in his. “Like flirting with a really cute teaching assistant in my psychology class.”

He chuckled. "Don't remind me of how awkward I was back then." Not that he still didn't have moments of being awkward now. "I can still remember the flak I got for taking an interest in a freshman." But he was glad he had.

"Go on you can say it. The flak that you got for taking interest in a weird freshman." Buffy squeezed his hand. "And you weren't the only one that was awkward. I dropped books on your head. Not the best way to introduce yourself to a hottie."

Even though they'd been together for a while now and it was clear that Buffy found him attractive, being called a 'hottie' still made Riley flush. He ducked his head for a brief moment, then shook his head. "Have to admit, I wasn't sure about you at the beginning." He might have considered her a typical blonde cheerleader-type. "But, you have a way of being very intriguing."

Buffy snorted out a laugh that wasn't very lady like at all. "Intriguing? Is that a code word for 'deer in the headlights couldn't think of a lie fast enough' when you saw me patrolling? Then yes I guess you could say I was intriguing?"

He laughed again. "To be fair, you ran into me a few times, too, when I was doing very non-educational type things." He thought about the first time they discovered who they really were. "... And actually, I think the word I used to say to Forest and Graham was 'peculiar'."

He turned his head and flashed her a smile.

"I can live with peculiar. Johnny Depp is peculiar." Buffy said with a laugh. "You know when we both realized we had more in common than we thought, you saved my life."

There had been no way she could have defeated the Gentlemen on her own. That was a fact of life that Buffy realized every day. She would have stayed dead at sixteen if not for Xander. Buffy's friends kept her alive a lot more than Slayer skills did.

"I'm surprised I could even function, quite honestly." He liked to think he had his moments of helpfulness with Buffy, though she certainly could handle her own most of the time. "I'd never seen someone move like you. Especially one so good-looking."

Buffy laughed, "what only homely girls could move fast? You might want to watch how you phrase that around other people." She leaned in and pecked his cheek. "Besides, haven't you seen Chinese Kung Fu movies? All the women are pretty."

"Yeah, well, there's not exactly a lot of Kung Fu girls in Sunnydale." Though he was sure Graham and Forrest might like the idea. "But even so, I think they'd have a hard time holding a candle up to you."

“And that is one of the many reasons why I love you.” Buffy beamed up at him. “You see the peculiar under the mask and you don’t care.”

"And I love that you can over look some of the painfully dull aspects of my life." He smiled at her. He was semi-kidding, but he did grow up in Iowa.
